Snowpack in Northern Idaho Tops 1974 Levels
The Federal Soil Conservation Service reports Northern Idaho snowpack now 2 percent above early 1974 levels when floods caused over 30 million dollars in damage. Snow in the Spokane River drainage is 2 percent higher than last year and 122 percent higher than 1973, with the heaviest accumulation at lower elevations 3,000 to 3,500 feet likely to melt quickly in heavy rains.

Snow Removal Costs Higher Than 1974 Total
Sandpoint Highway District reports January 1975 snow removal expenses nearly 9,300 with 5,300 for labor 3,000 for equipment maintenance and 600 for fuel. The 1974 total was 4,315 and 1975 could reach 30,000 due to expected continued snowfall and equipment issues including a grader transmission costing about 2,262.

William L. Are also known as Morgan was sentenced to 75 years in the Idaho State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to two counts of second degree kidnapping and one count of armed robbery. He received 25 years on each count to run consecutively and was to be transported by air. Are, 29, had been jailed in Bonner County awaiting extradition to California when accomplices freed him.
