Bonner County school board trustees elected a nervous Blaine Stevens over three other candidates Tuesday night, thus securing his appointment to lead the Stevens schools.
Idaho Senate rescinded on an 18 17 vote its ratification of the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment amid heated debate. The move follows similar actions by other states and faces questions of legal effect as the Federal Register awaits action. Leaders and opponents argued over the legitimacy and impact while noting the political mobilization across Idaho.
The Idaho Senate voted 18 to 17 to rescind ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Republicans supporting repeal numbered 14 including Abrahams and others, Democrats supporting repeal were 4 led by Bilyeu, and Republicans opposing repeal totaled 6 with Barker and others. Democrats opposing repeal were 11 including Bell and Judd among others.
Gov. John V. Evans praised Idaho State Penitentiary Administrator as capable of resolving current issues without mediation. He cited unusual security measures in foggy weather hindering tower observation and rising inmate visitor drug smuggling, plus overcrowding contributing to complaints.
Gov. John V Evans urged the Idaho Legislature to adopt a FY budget about 3 million above initial plans. He backs an $275,173,000 total with $1,250,000 more for public schools, a new $800,000 prison security unit, and funding to complete a 17 million Eagle Island project if needed. The plan assumes revenue near $278 million amid drought concerns and tax rebates.
Federal funds totaling 850000 for Priest River High School may be redirected from Clark Fork. The district must prove 650000 available to complete a scaled plan, prompting removal of gymnasium construction and a music room or cafeteria seating in early phases while alternatives are considered.
