Jaycees Honor Sandpoint Outstanding Citizens
The Sandpoint Jaycees held their Annual Awards Banquet at the Pastime Panhandle Room naming four major awards and other certificates for local residents. Jim Soukup received the Distinguished Service Award for his work with Pacific Power and Light in Sandpoint and broad community involvement. Soukup, a California native with a BS from Long Beach State College, has worked with Pacific Power since 1965 and as marketing representative in Sandpoint since 1969. He leads and supports youth and civic groups, including the Sandpoint Bulldog Bench, Elks Club, Chamber of Commerce, community float fundraising, Methodist Church, Leo's Club, Lions Club, and Boy Scout activities.

Scott Resigns As Chief Deputy
Bonner County Sheriff Robert H. Wilcox announced the resignation of Chief Deputy Howard Scott of Sandpoint effective March 15 1971. Scott headed the Narcotics Section for two years and cited personal reasons for leaving. He praised Sheriff Wilcox and praised cooperation from deputies and Prosecuting Attorney Everett Hofmeister. Scott was born in the Sandpoint area and previously served in the Army and as a Sandpoint City Police officer.

Trustee Addresses Sandpoint Rotarians on Underground Newspaper
A School District 82 trustee spoke to Sandpoint Rotarians about the rival issue of a student underground newspaper. The talk followed an earlier informal lecture by Dr J P Munson who called his remarks biased. Dr Bill Morton urged the school board to set policy guidelines covering department communication and free speech.

Four Sandpoint men arrested in Bonner County narcotics raid
Bonner County Sheriff Robert H. Wilcox led a Friday night raid on a Syringa Heights home resulting in the arrest of four Sandpoint men Ken Kimzey Richard Berry Gary Churchill and Steve Bowman on possession of narcotics. About 1/2 kilo of marijuana was seized as deputies forced entry and two suspects tried to discard the cache. Bond not set. hearings scheduled Monday in Magistrates Court.

Fire Destroys Fish Creek Home
A fire starting in a boy’s bedroom Sunday afternoon leveled the Walter Williams family home in Fish Creek. The wood frame rented dwelling from Jim Cravey of California burned beyond repair. the family saved only their clothes. Williams arrived three minutes after discovery but could not stop the blaze. Sheriff's Office and Forest Service attempts to respond were hindered by winterized equipment.
