Andrus names acting heads in Idaho government

Governor elect Cecil Andrus announced Robert Lenaghen as acting director of Administrative Services and Maj. Gen. George Bennett as Idaho National Guard adjutant. John Blaine becomes insurance commissioner and Tom McEldowney acts as director of Finance. Kay Pell named state special services administrator. Charlton to remain chief of the Liquor Dispensary until Feb. 8. Additional appointments expected later.

Temperature at 7 30 a m was 25 degrees with four inches of new snow. Skiing is excellent and all facilities are operating daily through the weekend.

Many Assis Toys Project Honored by Local Leaders

Wayne Hook and Kirby Scribner of Sandpoint Lions Club thanked supporters for helping 517 children and 162 families in Bonner County. They noted cooperation from Injector's Car Club Sea Scouts and the sheriff's office. The toy center will reopen January 4 5 and 6 from 8 am to 5 pm for free clothing and to sell rummage items supporting Toys for Tots.

Franco Commutes Death Sentences for Basque Alists

In Burgos Spain Generalissimo Francisco Franco commuted the death sentences of six Basque nationalists to the next highest penalties. The move follows pressure from European governments and the Vatican and comes after a cabinet meeting and Council of the Realm. The six prisoners awaited in Burgos central prison as the Vatican expressed relief.

Idaho toll climbs to 320 in traffic fatalities

The Idaho traffic fatality toll rose to 320 on Tuesday with Kenneth A. Heiner, 20, of Nampa, identified as the latest victim in a two car crash. Heiner rode as a passenger in a car driven by Charles Norris, 17, of Caldwell, which ran a stop sign at Karber and Middletom Roads and was struck by a vehicle driven by Melvin L. Russell, 28, of Boise.

Coolin Approves Sewer District

Residents of Coolin Idaho vote 51 to 8 to form a sewer district. Five directors are elected: Charles Brown Ted Ryan Bill Warren Russel Bishop and Jim Roberts with terms 2 4 and 6 years respectively.

Two Morrison-Knudsen pilots die in Boise jet crash

In Boise the bodies of Emmett E. Schille and Stephen W. Sandmeyer were found in a DeHavilland 125 jet wreckage after an instrument landing at Boise Airport. The crash near Lucky Peak will be investigated by the Civil Aeronautics Board. Both pilots had more than 25 years flying experience.

Alitalia Caravelle Crash At Turin Airport

A Turin Rome Alitalia Caravelle taxiing for takeoff collided with a snowplow on Caselle Airport runway. Five tons of fuel spilled and ignited, killing the snowplow driver. All 33 passengers and five crew members escaped injury.

Wing flap falls from 747 during training flight

A 300 pound section of wing flap detached from a United Airlines Boeing 747 during a training flight in Bell Gardens California and crashed through a duplex roof. No one in the building or on the ground was injured.

A Fenley Co soft coal mine near Hyden Kentucky trapped 38 men after an underground explosion. State police report confirms the incident and crews head to the scene. The Fenley mine is three miles from Hyden in southeastern Kentucky, about 150 miles east of Cave City.
