School Budgets Won’t Be Cut After Funds Release
HEW under secretary Frank C. Carlucci said the release of $1.5 billion in impounded 1973 funds will not trigger compensating cutbacks or punitive actions in the President’s budget. The money supports education for the handicapped and needy children, alcoholism services, and biomedical research, though nearly $200 million’s authority remains questionable.

Justice Department Sues Nevada Over Job Discrimination Laws
The Civil Rights Division filed a civil suit in Reno federal court accusing Nevada of enforcing laws that cap women to eight hours per day and six days per week. The suit cites the 1964 Civil Rights Act and seeks a declaration that the statutes violate federal law and are invalid. Pottinger noted a review of similar laws in other states and that the Nevada legislature does not meet again until 1975.
