Former President Harry S. Truman dies at age 88 after a long illness. The article notes his presidency began April 12, 1945 following FDR's death, his WWII leadership, and later remarks about the atomic bomb. Page two continues the obituary.
An early United Press International bulletin reports 550 traffic deaths in the U.S. and notes a higher figure of 575 in another tally. A separate accident occurred on U.S. 421 near Bules Creek, North Carolina, as officials investigate more fatalities.
Police say a Friday Sandpoint street crash at Boyer and Pine involved Jackson Dunlap 33 of 1124 Cedar who failed to stop at a stop sign and hit Lorna M Stevens 16. Injured also were Dunlap and his mother Viola Dunlap. Dunlap cited for failure to stop.
Margaret Walker resigns as Sandpoint Welcome Wagon Hostess citing doctor's orders. Five year sponsors expressed gratitude, naming Bargain Supply through Washington Water Power Co as loyal supporters. The community hopes to find a new hostess to serve the growing area.
Two Twin Falls boys, Michael 8 and Kurt 10, spoke by toy walkie talkies with an apparent Santa on Christmas Day. The father, Robert VanAusdein, witnessed the exchange and says the boys are now believers.
James Brockway was elected first vice president of the Idaho Association of Elected County Officials. Ada County Clerk Clarence Planting was chosen president, succeeding August Bethke of Rupert. Also elected were W. C. Norberg Jr as second vice president, Zoe Shaffer as secretary treasurer, Ed Brown as sheriff, Colen Sweeter as county clerk, Morgan Munger as director at large, with other directors named for various county associations and statewide groups.
Cloudy with showers and cooler air expected through Wednesday. Gusty winds at times and a 60 percent chance of rain. Lows near 35 tonight and a high around 40 on Wednesday.
UPI reports the 1973 winter wheat seeding in the Ma ho area reached 925000 acres, the highest since 1969, with 40.7 million bushels forecast, up 17 percent from last year. National fall seeding totaled 42.8 million acres, up one percent.
All Idaho license plates not on the staggered renewal system expire midnight December 1 1972. Friday December 29 1972 is the last day they can be renewed to meet the legal January 1 1973 deadline due to assessors offices closed December 30 31 and January 1.
