Five Indians Arrested At Timber Site In California
Five Pit Indians were arrested during a weekend occupation of a Sugar Loaf Mountain timber cutting area in OLD STATION California. About 50 tribal members remain nearby and armed rangers were flown in to protect logging operations amid tensions over land claimed by the Pit tribe. The arrests followed a week of occupation at Burney Logging Co site under U.S. Forest Service contract. Arraignment of five defendants was scheduled before a U.S. magistrate in Redding. The wider dispute traces to 32 million acres the Pit tribe seeks to reclaim from the federal government.
