Tax cut possible for Sandpoint residents next year

City officials say a small tax reduction may occur for 1977 78 if employee salaries rise on a cost of living basis. The amount could be offset by road repairs and a proposed 1.8 million waterworks bond. A home valued at 20 000 could see a 27.75 decrease, with overall levy down about 12 mills.

Lightning Strikes Spark Fires Across Sandpoint District

Forest Service reports 15 manned fires caused by electrical storms and 12 lightning fires managed by the Department of Lands. Northern Caribou Creek area hardest hit. all fires under control. Minor power outages hit Hope and Clark Fork areas. Weekly precipitation 0.19 inches. highs reached 92 with a mild weekend outlook of dry, warm weather.

Snake River Study For Wild and Scenic Status

Seattle ups report: 34 miles along the Snake River near the Idaho Washington border from Asotin upstream to the confluence with the Grande Ronde eyed for wild and scenic designation. A draft environmental statement is planned for fall with a final report next year. 11 miles would be scenic and the stretch to Asotin recreational.

Gardener Storekeeper and Mechanic-Without Eyes

Harvey Prater a 64 year old sightless resident of Sagle Idaho operates a small grocery gas station and store near the Sagle school. He lost his sight at 22 and supports himself through hard work carpentry and auto repair while relying on social security and avoiding welfare. He spends long hours works on motors and recently rebuilt a 1951 Studebaker pickup planning to sell it after finishing. He also tends a large garden and lives in a house he hopes to rent to supplement income.

Real Shock Hits Sandpoint Woman Mowing Lawn

Margaret Sullivan of Sandpoint received an electric shock while using an electric mower when a cord break trapped the charge. Neighbor Shannon Abromeit sprinted across the street to unplug the cord. Sullivan recovered on scene and was not taken to hospital.

Two Injured In U S 200 Collision Near Bonner

Fred Stranberg 19 of Spokane collided with Leonard Mitchell 60 of Sandpoint while westbound and eastbound on U S 200. Mitchell attempted a left turn onto U S 95 causing the crash. Both drivers treated for minor injuries and released. Vehicle damages were about $1000 for Mitchell and $700 for Stranberg. Mitchell cited for failure to yield.
