Wentz and the county Planning and Zoning Commission presented proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance at a Monday public hearing. They noted changes would waive survey requirements for certain subdivisions such as gift transfers to immediate family and court orders while keeping most rules intact. Several attendees urged clarifications in multiple sections, with one man urging no change.
Seven Sandpoint High School students took part in the 1977 YMGA Youth Legislature in Boise. Leanne Smith and Doug Power presented a euthanasia case before student Idaho Supreme Court justices, researching 20 hours with attorney Bruce Green. Beth Coon and Cindy Medlin urged a $300,000 educational TV translator project, but the bill failed in the House.
Ralph Atkin known as Cherokee Jim visits the Daily Bee to claim his rainmaking methods brought rain or snow to Noxon and Trout Creek for two months. He uses mirrors, musical instruments, goose feathers, dynamite, and loud amplifiers to draw moisture from clouds and cites snow on hills around his cabin. He notes Lightning Creek at Clark Fork is now up and wetter than before.
Sandpoint learned its comprehensive liability policy will be canceled January 15 1978 due to worsening wooden water mains. Insurance agent Joe Swendig said American States Insurance will not renew after the three year term and new coverage may raise rates. Mayor Ed Bitzman will seek alternatives and inform the Economic Development Administration as the city reapplies for a federal grant with potential August decision.
The Centers for Disease Control began a nationwide hunt to link leukemia with radiation exposure from a 1957 Yucca Flats atomic test. Dr. Glyn Caldwell cited two veterans among 1,100 nearby troops who developed leukemia and urged locating rosters to identify other exposed men.
President Carter previewed a tough energy tax plan that could raise gasoline by as much as 57 cents a gallon by 1988 and curb consumption by 10 percent in the next decade. The briefing outlined annual nickel gas tax increases tied to consumption and a 1962 87 oil price rise to about 11.28 per barrel, with rebates aimed at low income Americans.
Barbara Eich aged 16 from Cocclalla and Melissa Davis 15 from Sagle were injured when their 1977 Subaru westbound on Bridge Street lost control and struck the Sand Creek Bridge. Both girls were treated at Bonner General Hospital and released. The vehicle sustained about 2000 dollars in damage.
The Fournier Agency at 123 S. 3rd was broken into sometime last weekend. Over $270 in cash and postage stamps were stolen from a locked desk drawer. No arrests have been made.
Three runaways ages 16 and 14 were found sleeping in bags on a vacant lot on 3rd Avenue between Lake and Superior Streets around 7 40 a m Monday. They were Spokane youths reported missing from their homes and detained at the city police department for identification before custody transferred to Bonner County Sheriffs Office awaiting parents arrival.
The Bonner County Education Association and School District 82 open 1977-78 contract talks at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Farmin School. The public is invited to attend.
