Mead Plant Begins Cutbacks Amid Power Shortage
Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works in Spokane initiated a shut down of a pot line after Bonneville Power Administration cut power and the EPA ordered a 40 percent interruptible power reduction. About 70 workers will be laid off initially this week, with the potential that the eighth potline cannot open on May 1. The Mead Plant employs around 1,300, and officials will try to preserve the current workforce.
