Sandpoint business men host the annual Moonlight Madness Sale on Friday evening with most downtown shops open from 7 to 9. The two hour event draws hundreds of shoppers and fills streets as merchants advertise exceptional deals in today’s Daily Bee.
The EPA awards Sandpoint $38,850 to build a sludge holding lagoon at the airport and landscape sewer facilities. Project aims to store sludge during winter when fields are inaccessible and spread it on agricultural land in summer. Experts caution heat treatment before any home lawn use.
The Idaho State Board of Education considers changing graduation requirements for the first time in over 20 years. Public “Educational Speak-Outs” are set for April 8 in seven cities to gather ideas on courses and credits, with Supt. Roy Truby saying attendees influence a tentative package for the next examination cycle.
County assessor Glora Bennett notes fees increase from 7.20 to 12.60 for the low rate and 18 to 29.40 for the high rate. She says no final decision yet on penalties for those who renewed under the old rates.
Bonner County Sheriff Robert Wilcox submitted a resignation letter to the county commissioners stating he will leave office June 1 after 7.5 years as sheriff. He cited diminished motivation following a recall attempt and stated it is time for a change for his family and the community. Commissioners Jim Brockway noted his term ends in January and will appoint a successor by June 1, with potential internal or external candidates still to be determined.
Senator James McClure reported that the preliminary draft Environmental Impact Statement for expanded phosphate mining in southeast Idaho will stay on its original schedule. He said Interior Secretary Kleppe urged concurrent hydrological studies by the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology and emphasized rigorous public review before final adoption.
