Reports from first through eighth grades detail Sunday puppet shows by Odin Grade School students, classroom activities, birthday notices, and plans for an Easter bulletin board. Students celebrate, study feudalism and the Holy Land, and note absent classmates and hospital news.
About forty Odin students from grades 6 to 8 performed a puppet show at the Sandoval P T A meeting on March 27 in the grade school gym. They presented Little Red Riding Hood Joey The Clown and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs under art teacher Mrs Verdy Hurd.
Mrs. Katestella Schaffnit, 74, died at her home north of Sandoval on Saturday March 25 after a two year illness. Born September 20, 1875 in Sandoval, she married Fred Schaffnit on March 18, 1896. Survived by husband, three daughters Edna Strang, Rita Hill, Ruth Alexander, a son Carl, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral held March 28 at the Christian Church with Rev. N A Kahl officiating. Sandoval Eastern Star conducted rites. Interment in Sandoval cemetery.
A huge crowd attended the all night quartet singing at the Centralia school auditorium on Friday March 24 marking the event s first anniversary. Walter Shipp served as master of ceremonies as baskets of flowers from merchants adorned the stage. The Gospelaires Quartette marks two years since its founding and plans three more all night singings on the fourth Fridays of June August and October with tickets available for June.
The W S C S of Sandoval Methodist Church met at Mrs. Myrtle Mason's home on Friday March 24 for their regular session with eleven members present. The group opened with singing and prayer, reviewed minutes and treasurer's report, and discussed Christian brothers overseas. The April meeting will be at Mrs. Ruby Schneider's home with Mrs. Norma Hester leading. Refreshments were served by the hostess.
In loving memory of our dear mother Mrs Catherine Evans who passed away ten years ago on April 1 and brother Harry Evans who died three years ago on April 1. Years have passed since that sad day when ones we loved were called away. God them home it was His will. Within our hearts they liveth still. Sadly missed by children brother and sisters.
Lorraine Meredith dined with Alberta Thalman and attended the Marion county singing convention in Odin. Alberta joined Lorraine for supper then they went to church. Geraldine Kingan stayed with Fred Kingan's family over Sunday. 54 were in Sunday School.
Jimmy King the 10 year old son of Mrs. Pelen Kir had an operation to remove a tumor from his left leg at the Children's hospital in St. Louis on Friday.
The Marion County Federation of Woman's Club met at Odin High School on Saturday March 25 with 52 attendees. Dr M K Markel of Sandoval spoke on advances in heart disease treatment over fifty years as clubs shared readings music and reports with officers and delegates named for Chicago May convention.
Mrs. Beulah Chiarottino, chairwoman, announced the Sandoval Red Cross drive for funds has not yet reached its goal. Residents who have not donated may leave contributions at the First National Bank or the post office in Sandoval.
Mrs Laura Tooker thanks friends for cards and letters received on her birthday expressing gratitude for the thoughtful messages and support.
Mrs Etta Prescott of Pinckneyville attended the funeral of Mrs Fred Schaffint on Tuesday and later visited Mr and Mrs C M Hildebrand.
J W Bagley longtime Odin resident and retired farmer died Friday March 24. Funeral conducted Sunday March 26 at Wilson Funeral Home Odin with Rev An gus Phillips Kinmundy in charge. Survived by wife two daughters Mrs Frank Dunnette New Richland Minnesota and Mrs Violet Evans San Jose California and sister Mrs J W Dawkins Centralia. Burial at Peaceful Valley Cemetery Odin.
Notice to all American Legion and Auxiliary members the County Legion Meeting is set for Thursday night March 30 at 8 00 pm in the Centralia Legion Cottage 227 North Poplar Street Department Commander Merle Schaad will speak Joe Ladds Orchestra will provide music and refreshments will be served by the Legion Auxiliary
Miss Janice Perrine on route 50 east of Odin celebrated her 14th birthday Saturday afternoon March 25 with friends. Games were played and a general good time was had by the youngsters. Refreshments were served and Janice received several nice gifts from her guests.
The next regular meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be Tuesday April 4th. All members are urged to attend. The Sewing Club met at Mrs Sopha Hawleys home Tuesday in honor of Mrs Wilbur Hawley with a social time and refreshments. The club is made up of young married ladies and a few young ladies.
