Nicolay 86 dies after three week illness in Centralia
John Louie Nicolay aged 86 a lifelong Shattuc farmer died December 23 at St Marys hospital Centralia after a three week illness. He was born in Shattuc in 1862 son of Isabell and Christopher Nicolay and lived there all his life. He married Mary Walker of Patoka who died in 1911 and 6 children were born. Survived by wife Annie Schluchman and four sons Chrissie Sullivan Adolph Los Angeles John Jr Sacramento and Thomag Sandoval a brother C L Nicolay Carlyle, eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. December 27 Garnier Funeral Home Centralia. interment Hillcrest cemetery.

Joe Vermes age 59 4 14 was found deceased at his Sandoval home by neighbor Spicer on December 23. He was a lifelong resident, a painter and interior decorator who lived alone since his wife’s death. Survivors include daughters Rena Vermes of St Louis and Mrs Norman Griffin of Denver, a son Captain Edward Vermes U S Army in Japan, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held December 27 at Cox and Martin Funeral Home with Sandoval Masons assisting. burial followed at Sandoval Cemetery.
