News briefs report Japan's unconditional surrender accepted under Potsdam terms. President Truman announced the capitulation at 6 00 p m Central War Time and General Douglas MacArthur to supervise signing. Sandoval residents celebrated with a city parade and services at local churches.
Chief Warrant Officer Robert Louis Williams 27, U S Navy, son of Mr and Mrs Alva Williams of Sandoval, reported missing in action in the South Pacific since July 30 1945. A veteran of ten years, he trained at Great Lakes and Navy schools in Pennsylvania and Florida, served in the Atlantic and Pacific, survived two sinkings the U S Carolina and the U S Indianapolis, and spent a recent leave with his parents about sixty days ago.
The Sandoval Volunteer Fire Department battled a garage fire in the west end of Sandoval on August 9 at about 9 30 p m. Glen Saunders owned the storage garage. Ernest Rizzon Sr. alerted help after spotting the blaze at the Joe Niestroy residence and aiding with water until firefighters arrived. Fire Chief Berlin Smith blamed flying train sparks from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for the fire. Firemen Everett Meredith and Kenneth Day drove the responding trucks.
S Sgt D E Hoskinson son of Mr and Mrs Herman Hoskinson of Odin and Miss Eileen Rouge daughter of Mr and Mrs William Rouge of Peoria were married July 22 in Yuma Arizona with the bride s parents attending Following a four day honeymoon through California Hoskinson a 1938 Odin High School graduate has since joined the Marines and served in San Diego Norman Oklahoma Mojave and La Mesa California Miss Rouge a Bradley College graduate once worked as a stenographer in Peoria They plan to settle where they can find a home and are now living in La Mesa California where he is stationed
PFC William C Willis arrived Saturday August 11 to spend forty five days with his parents Mr and Mrs A H Willis after twenty nine months overseas in the Caribbean area. He enlisted November 18 1942 and this is his first furlough since entering service. His brother Pfc J R Willis stationed in Chicago is expected home soon. the two brothers have not met in over three years.
The Sandoval Community High School will open Tuesday September 4 1945. Students may register or change schedules August 27 to 31 by calling the high school office. New staff includes V. V. Robertson Mable Kostanser Floyd Smith Lucille Norman Mrs Zellma Dame Patricia Huelbig Mary Evelyn Johnson Robert I Hartley and C E Crawford. Bus routes run as usual and textbooks rented at opening.
A Low Mass at 6 o'clock and a High Mass at 9 o'clock were read Wednesday morning August 15 in St Lawrence Church Sandoval for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother.
At a regular Odin Village board meeting Fred Frimel was elected village treasurer following the resignation of Wallace Goodall who was recently inducted into the army.
Sergt James Zeph Hartwell of the Marines son of Mr and Mrs C L Hartwell Sandoval arrived home August 15 after thirty three and a half months with the Motor Transport Battalion of the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific He enlisted in August 1941 received basic training in San Diego embarked for overseas October 20 1942 and returned July 29 1945 He earned a Presidential Unit Citation for Tarawa the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with two battle stars and one American Defense ribbon He is on a thirty day leave and will report to Washington DC September 12.
A Friday July 17 meeting at 7 30 PM in the Sandoval News office will finalize plans for a Sandoval recreation center for youth. The Masonic room is dropped. two alternatives McCall building and Redman Hall will be discussed. youths urged to attend and vote on location and entertainment.
The Star Cafe in Sandoval, owned by Mr and Mrs Jimmie Hooper, has been remodeled and will open Sunday morning August 19. They invite the public to visit their newly decorated quarters and enjoy a selection of home cooked meals.
Mrs Della Underhill entertained her pinochle club at her home on Tuesday evening. Prizes went to Mrs Dilla Neiwalt Mrs Hazel Soulon Mrs Jessie Morrison with a floating prize to Mrs Sopha Hawley. Refreshments were served by the hostess with help from Mrs Morrison and Mrs Hawley. The next meeting will be at Mrs William West's home.
Cecilia Neistroy daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Neistroy of Sandoval wed James Joyce son of Mr and Mrs Maurice Joyce in a double ring ceremony at St Lawrence Church Sandoval officiated by Rev Edmund Schumacher. The couple plan a short honeymoon in St Louis after a reception at the bride’s parents home.
Lewis E. Daggett of Norfolk Virginia died in a British hospital in Montevedia Uragua on August 6 1945 after his wife Mrs Eva Daggett was notified July 25 He was the brother of Opal French and Glen Daggett of Sandoval More details to follow
The Odin community plans a Thanksgiving service August 19 at 8:00 PM in the Odin High School gymnasium. The program features the National Anthem Invocation by Rev. W V Beauford scripture readings by Rev. Angus Phillips and Rev. J D Jenkins Sr, and performances by the Methodist and Assembly of God churches.
Baptismal services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Sandoval Christian Church by Rev. John D. Jenkins Sr for Marge Ann Loomis of Odin. Several from Odin and Sandoval attended the solemn occasion.
The Union Service will be held at the Christian Church on Sunday evening August 19 at 8 00 p m Rev B L Morris returns to his pastorship after a six week absence He will preach at the morning service at 745 a m with the title Hold On to God Keep Your Faith and at the union service the sermon will be Jesus the Friend in Need
On August 14 1945 Odin residents waited for President Truman to announce Japan’s surrender. At 6 pm Central War Time crowds gathered in the business district parading with car horns and church bells. A praise service was held at the local Christian Church and businesses closed. The village displayed flags and shared in communal jubilation.
Mr and Mrs H J Sebastian of Odin celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Aug 5 with a family dinner marking 71 years in Odin. Their son John shares the day’s spotlight with birthday gifts and grandchildren. John Jr. serves in the U S Navy in the Philippines.
Mrs. Bessie Wilmoth entertained friends at her Sandoval home on August 4 honoring her daughter Freda on her sixteenth birthday. Games and refreshments followed. Freda received many nice gifts from her friends.
The infant daughter of Signalman and Mrs Willard Kunkle of Sandoval was named Rita Diane at a baptism performed by Rev Edmund Schumecher at St Lawrence Church in Sandoval at 1 o clock Sunday morning August 12. Sponsors were Mr and Mrs Mar Cooksie.
