Mabel A Perry Crowned San Saba County Pecan Queen 1964

Mabel Anne Perry sponsored by Live Oak Home Demonstration Club was named 1964 San Saba County Pecan Queen before hundreds on Tuesday night November 26. Karen Wesala and Nancy Taylor were crowned princesses and will reign with Queen Perry at the ninth annual Pecan Show on December 7 at Ranchmen's Tower Hotel.

Hunters Check 590 Deer At Locker Plant

A total of 590 deer had been checked into the San Saba Locker Plant by noon Tuesday November 26 according to owner James Harkey. He notes deer numbers are higher than last season and predicts more checks before December 31. Game Warden Norman Henk says deer are plentiful and in better condition due to continued mild weather.

Thanksgiving Services Held At County Churches

Special Thanksgiving services were held in San Saba and Richland Springs on Wednesday evening November 27. At First Methodist Church San Saba the combined choirs sang as Rev Moody Smith led the service and Rev Jack Hooper hosted. Rev C E Bradford of San Saba Gospel Church delivered the message and an offering supported Ministerial Alliance charity work. In Richland Springs First Baptist hosted a 7 p m service with Rev William P Trende delivering the sermon. Rev Kenneth Cole helped, and the church provided the music.

Cotton Ginning Falls Short Due To Drouth

Mrs. W. R. Shipp reports local cotton gins will process about 52 bales by midweek with the season’s total 400 to 600 bales below last year. Drouth across the county reduced dryland cotton yields, following a season that saw roughly 1400 bales ginned last year and 1500 the year before.

Quail Season Opens in County This Sunday

The annual quail hunting season starts Sunday December 1 and runs to January 16. Shooting hours are sunrise to sunset, with a daily bag limit of 12 quail and 36 in possession. Shotguns must be plugged to three shells. Do not hunt from public roads or use a vehicle. Landowner permission required and gates should be closed. Hunters urged to follow safety measures.

Jaycees Name Winners In Turkey Shoot

Winners announced Sunday afternoon November 24 by Jimmy Ward include John Wright taking the 20-yard head shoot with pistol and Morris Lindsey the 100-yard kneeling target with scope. Jimmy Ward won the 100-yard cutthroat with scope, Mos Odean Ray claimed the 50-yard women’s target, and several others earned prizes in bow and arrow and iron sight events. Notable names include Raym ond Dyess, Mrs. Mac Gatliff, and Mrs. Charles Everitt, among others, with a rifle drawing winner also named.

Armadillos to host Taylor in regional tilt at Kangaroo Field

San Saba's Golden Armadillos travel to Killeen Friday November 29 to face District 20-A4 champion Taylor Ducks in a regional matchup at 8 p.m. Taylor, 7-4, beat Rockdale 9-7 in bi district, ending Rockdale's first TD season. Marek leads Ducks scoring. Armadillos prep fully fit with large fan turnout expected.

County Pecan Show Sets 225 Entr ies Next Week

Floyd Gage of the San Saba County Pecan Growers Association announces a goal of 225 entries for the county Pecan Show to be held next week on December 7 at Ranchmen's Tower Hotel. Entries from San Saba and neighboring counties compete for ribbons, with exhibition-only entries also accepted. all must be checked in by noon Friday December 6 at the county agent’s office or the San Saba Chamber of Commerce.
