A county community laments a large crowd firing firecrackers at a PTA Halloween Carnival causing property damage and injuries. It urges authorities to enforce ordinances banning firecrackers and to restrict sales within city limits, praising the PTA while condemning the irresponsible conduct.

Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Brown of San Saba were notified by the War Department of Pvt. Haskell Brown Jr.’s death in Japan. His body was recovered from a drainage ditch on Oct. 20 with death reported as drowning. Brown, born December 16, 1929, attended local schools, worked at Jeff Byrd Grocery, and enlisted in July 1948. Surviving are his parents two sisters and grandparents. The body was to be returned to San Saba.
The Waffle Shop held its formal re opening after extensive remodeling on Monday. Over 1000 people attended both day and night as part of the Halloween Carnival. Owner Frank Edwards expressed gratitude for the strong interest and nearby firms sent congratulatory flowers and messages. Free refreshments were provided throughout.
J C Byrd has reopened his strap iron and metal business in the Cum mings Hatchery building west of the Hotel block, moving from Floyd Jennings' location.
San Saba Produce Co owned by Gus Mays and Shorty Sawyer purchased the Lewis Smithwick warehouse and rear stone building plus the lot for 85000 dollars. The company moved from the Bagley building to the new 48 by 116 foot tile and limestone facility southeast of the courthouse, with a formal opening planned Saturday.
Foster J. Tom aged 77 of Cherokee died October 26 from a heart attack. Funeral services were held October 27 at Cherokee Baptist Church with Rev. Sam D. Taylor officiating. Born November 22, 1871 in Brenham, he moved to Mason County and later Cherokee, where he spent most of his life as a carpenter.
San Saba residents vote in a special city election on purchasing the LCRA electric distribution system with a $200000 bond plan. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm at city hall under Gilmer Aiken rules. Qualified voters must have six months residence and property tax status. A state election features three State Board of Education candidates and ten proposed constitutional amendments with editorials on the page.
Voters will face Texas secret ballot rules on Tuesday with unchanged voting steps. They pick a ballot, detach a perforated stub, sign the back, conceal the number, and place both ballot and stub in sealed containers. The stub box opens only by court order to match ballots to voters.
Ten amendments to the state constitution will be proposed in the state election. Voters will choose from a slate of three candidates a man to represent the 21st Congressional District on the newly designated State Board of Education. The election centers on these constitutional changes and board leadership.
San Saba Future Farmers of America received a 1949 Ford pickup donated by T P Golding Ford dealer to aid livestock projects and chapter activities. The vehicle is loaned indefinitely with maintenance responsibility by the FFA chapter and insured at no charge by Clements-Patten Agency. The chapter, one of the area’s largest with 68 Vocational Agriculture students, plans fat stock shows in Houston and San Antonio and contests in San Antonio and Stephenville.
Thomas E. Boatright aged 54 died from an axe wound while cedar cutting on Wade Ellis ranch near San Saba. He lived with his 15 year old son Bobby in Wallace Creek. Funeral services were held at San Saba Church of Christ conducted by Minister Jas A Fry.
San Saba County Memorial Hospital construction stalls due to a material shortage delaying flooring. An inspection was postponed. a preliminary walk through was planned to allow move in of supplies and equipment. Some equipment has arrived and is stored temporarily in the courthouse.
Cash Feed & Produce Co will relocate operations to the Bagley building vacated by Sar Saba Produce Co. The move will take effect Monday, announced by Gene Conner. Plans for using the current facilities under long term lease are not yet completed.
The grand jury in session Monday returned one indictment against Malachi Rogers charging burglary and theft in connection with the burglary of W. T. Little & Sons hardware story.
