San Saba weekly notes report local doings and developments. Photos for Ft Worth Palace, court minutes, corn and crop prospects, Red Bluff ferry, Lometa travelers, Ward Hardware sale, firemen’s Victoria convention, upcoming creamery in town, land purchases, a million dollar rain, Hokus Pokus stores, Lions Club formation, jail delivery thwarted, Carlos Ashley toward Lebanon Law School, and Judge Seiders returning from Mineral Wells convention.
The San Saba chapter of Future Farmers of America hosted its annual Father and Son party at Mill Pond park. The event highlighted the FFA boys’ progress in calf lamb and pig feeding and livestock judging, community support from business leaders, and the county’s livestock future, stressing education to meet farm and ranch challenges.
In San Saba a Lions Club call urged all citizens to eradicate rapidly growing weeds on vacant lots and near homes. With moist soil and weed proliferation, the plan aims to prevent seed spread and future high costs by acting now. Do it today.
A retro column notes events in San Saba including J E Vernor and N D Lidstone ads for fire insurance and lumber and coffins. Cherokee High School under principal W S Graves runs five months. John H Martin promotes land tracts and comfortable homes. Harvesting and shearing near done, Justice Seiders busy, wagons carry wool to town and back with galt and woosacks.
Dan Holland and NYA crew finished a 360 foot flag stone walkway on Rev Sam D Taylor owner lot on W Wallace Street front 100 feet deep 862 feet. Taylor plans two rack houses and a two family duplex later to ease rental shortages. Local notes mention Irvin Hubbert finding bodies at Roswell and trace family histories of the Hubbert and Knight families in Texas and California. Dennis Sullivan turns 75 May 5 and Minnie Webb identified as former Minnie Knight painter of the Alamo bas relief.
An Ada style ad urges readers to try Adlerika for stomach gas pressing on the heart. It claims one dose relieves gas and cleanses both upper and lower bowels at City Drug Store. Local items note Mrs May Kuykendall shopping in Cherokee and the Funderberg family returning to San Saba to live on the McConnell ranch near town.
Married to B R Webb in 1925, an automobile dealer and salesman. She has long made bas relief pictures and once sold a smaller Alamo piece for 300 dollars, copied from a colored post card.
Frank Chamberlain reports 25 acres of corn five feet high planted last February and early oats from August. A 36 acre cotton field is up, while Doc Jones shows a 10 acre tomato patch. Harkeyville runs 40 cotton acres. Frank Paxton visits from Salt Branch, 66 years farming Cherokee area, with 295 acres, 150 sheep, six milk cows, and 250 Leghorn hens. he left Lexington Virginia for Chicago then Texas in 1888. C. B. Wardlaw of Del Rio visits San Saba to review warehouse facilities for the Texas Sheep and Goat Raiser Assn.
Henry Stallings & Co of Lometa bought the Wiltenburg wool clip in Lampasas County, two carloads at 25 cents per pound, not to producers. The clip, from Delaine sheep, commands 2 to 3 cents above average due to quality and prep. It includes wool from Wittenburg and related growers. Shipped last week. the clip has been celebrated for over 60 years for uniform quality.
Belton anglers on the Lampasas river near the Shanklin home south of Belton hauled in a six foot alligator weighing about 48 pounds. The creature was already drowned when recovered. Fishermen were Don Smallwood W A Salles Newt Hamilton and Jack Hammond. Local speculation linked the animal to prior imports from Louisiana or Gators that escaped during the 1921 flood.
