Fish Rodeo Draws Local Children At Mill Pond Lake

130 youngsters plus 40 adults enjoyed the San Saba Fish Rodeo at Mill Pond Lake as 12 year old Ann Askey and 12 year old Joe Polk claimed early fish and first tagged bass prizes. The event runs through May with prizes donated by local businesses and clubs.

City to Name New Secretary

The City Council held a called meeting to consider applications for the City Secretary vacancy created by Rod Pridgeon s resignation. A second meeting was scheduled for today to name the new secretary. council also decided the secretary and corporation court judge roles may be held by the same person with a 240 monthly salary. United Telephone Co was granted a two year franchise with a 2 percent gross receipts tax to be paid to the city, replacing a prior one year term and allowing a second franchise request.

Polio Shots Expected Soon for San Saba County

San Saba County plans to administer the second free Salk polio shot to first and second graders after May 18 once the State Health Department confirms vaccine availability. County Health Officer Parley noted safety despite Cutter Laboratories concerns, with 286 children receiving the program since April 19.

Second Troop of Boy Scouts Organized in San Saba

San Saba observes a new Scout year with Troop 6 forming to meet growing needs alongside Troop 55 led by W. A. Clowe and Jimmy Ward. About 30 boys from Scout and Explorer groups, plus 100 attending Camp Qual at Camp Flat Rock, are involved or expected.

Pre School Check Ups To Begin Monday

Free pre school check ups for first graders entering school next year are scheduled to start Monday May. Unlike prior years no central clinic will be set up. each child will be taken to the office of a medical doctor a dentist and an optometrist.

Pridgeon Buys Walker Cleaners in City

Bobby Joe Pridgeon former City Secretary and judge takes over Walker's Cleaners. The operation becomes Pridgeon's Cleaners with staff staying. Bubba Walker assists his father George J. Walker at the Algebita Store. Walker's shop has run at its location for about 12 years, with prior ties to downtown cleaning and a 1946 partnership. Pridgeon is a World War II veteran with 94 combat missions and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He is San Saba born, Tarleton attendee, and married to Jean M. Jaynie with three children Craig, Bryan, and Susan.

Rose Girl Pageant Friday at Rogan Field

Mystery surrounds the Spring Musical Extravaganza as the Rose Girl will be revealed on Rogan Field Friday night. Students from Say school perform in Episode I Mother Goose Land and Episode II Flirtation Walk with stage and costumes by Mrs Stanley and Heton Lidstone. Jury Delivers Verdict in Gaddy Case After Trial

In District Court Judge Ferguson presided as the jury returned a verdict in favor of the plaintiff Mrs CB Zouk et al against Gaddy. The case concerned an injunction to keep defendants from leaving a storefront closed during spring sales. Trial began Monday morning and the jury reached a verdict Tuesday afternoon after deliberation. Several jurors were named and the defense was represented by Crump Jameson. Meanwhile a separate case resulted in a guilty plea for obtaining money by worthless checks, with a four year prison sentence imposed.

High Valley To Host Baptist Workers Meet

Baptist workers from San Saba county churches will hold a conference at High Valley Baptist Church on Friday May 8 beginning at 1 pm. Rev Geo Wilton of Richland Springs will deliver the sermon. Other speakers include Rev Leste Rogers of Richland Springs and Adrian Coleman of Brownwood. WMS and Board meetings follow noon.

A non denominational Bible class for downtown men will be organized Sunday May as the offices of Trowell Parsonages Mos AMneh announce. The plan includes laymen from several churches to teach using the International Sunday school lesson.

Owen Bros Ship 2200 Head Yearlings To South Dakota

The last of 2200 cattle from HM and Kelly Owen were loaded at Grumblea Switch east of San Saba at 11 45 a m Tuesday and left at 1 40 p m for Mobridge South Dakota where they will be pastured. A barbecue lunch for train crew press and guests followed at the Kally Owen home. The train includes 1900 yearling steers and 300 yearling heifers with 400 head sold to John Fraxton of Syracuse Kansas to go to South Dakota pastures. A party will drive to Kansas City to meet the train and rest before continuing to Mobridge.
