Rain brings welcome relief to San Saba county

A light but statewide rain began Monday night in the San Saba valley, the first meaningful shower of April and the first beneficial rain since January. Totals ranged from .50 to 1.00 inch with San Saba reporting near an inch, boosting cotton planting and field seed work across the county. The rain started about eight with a slow drizzle lasting past midnight.

Five Cars of Wool Mohair Go to Boston

White many sections of the state are stagnant so far as a market for wool and Mohair is concerned the growers are finding a ready market for it in San Saba J W McConnell Sons wool and Mohair buyers last week shipped two cars of wool to Beaton and today are loading out three cars of beautiful Mohair The Mohair and wool production of this county has increased many fold during the past five years and there is a ready market here for every pound The shipments indicate that most of the wool growery are selling at prevailing prices.

The Square Dance At the Club Room A Howling Success

The old time square dance at the San Saba Club Room last Friday night was a wonderful success. Music by Harkey Brothers and Benton Miller drew a crowded room and a fine spirit of fellowship. Sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Chamber of Commerce, thanks were extended to patrons, musicians, and contributors. Northwest citizens Jim Chamberlain and Charlie Reynolds were noted in court this week. Good rains bring fruit optimism from the county’s northwestern area.

Spring Creek Girl District Honors In 3 A Contest

Miss Cleora Bolinger of Spring Creek won the district championship at Brownwood and advances to the state Interscholastic League meet in Austin May 1 2 and 3. The state meet will determine national level standings.

Man Shot and Killed on Farm in Big Valley

Dr. J. C. Barrett age 60 was shot and killed on his Big Valley Mills county farm 12 miles north of San Saba. W. B. Fowler tenant surrendered admitting the shooting. a rifle was turned in. Barrett died from shotgun wounds. Bailey Fowler 25 was jailed for investigation. District court opens in Goldthwaite next Monday.

4 H Baby Beef Club Meeting Planned for County

The County gathers to form a 4 H Baby Beef Club at the Chamber of Commerce office Saturday May 10 at 10 am followed by lunch at Hotel San Saba. County Agent N E Scudder will outline the program and officers will be elected. W W Holman offers a calf donation, signaling broad rancher support for the project.

Richland Springs cave revealed as underground wonder

Richland Springs in San Saba county Texas is hailed as a new subterranean wonder rivaling famed caverns. Locals say Mark Terry discovered a peculiar cave on the Gibbons ranch eight years ago, described as a sunless, radiantly colored maze of rooms and passages.

Man Shoots Wife On Cherokee Road Sunday Night

Shorty Sampson is jailed on a charge of shooting his wife Sunday night on Cherokee road near Simp son hill. The auto party headed to a Galloway ranch party halted by a flat when a quarrel broke out. Four shots fired in darkness wounded the woman, who was taken to Brownwood hospital and remained alive Wednesday morning as the grand jury considered charges.

Moody issues order to fill Lee Moody Austin May election

Governor Moody announced a special election to fill the 17th Congressional District vacancy caused by the death of Congressman R. Q. Lee of Cisco. The election is set for May 20 and the district includes 19 counties: Brown, Burnet, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Concho, Eastland, Jones, Lampasas, McCulloch, Llano, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Runnels, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, and Taylor.

Lions Club District Meeting Held in San Saba

The Lions district convention in San Saba drew wide attendance with N H Pierce and W E Baxter among delegates. Mason was chosen as next meeting site for June 11 with a ladies night planned. Carl Runge gave the keynote on boys work, while Miss Clara Halden and Miss Bess Walters entertained.

Jury selection begins in Texas bank robbery case

In District Court at nine o'clock on Monday morning before Judge J. H. McLean the jury is being selected for the State of Texas versus C. A. McNeil charged with the December 19 1928 robbery of the Richland Springs State Bank. The case draws keen spectator interest as McNeil previously faced a 40 year penitentiary sentence for a Brownwood bank robbery conviction now on appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin.
