San Saba Tops Second in District Basketball Season
San Saba high school finished second after losses to Lampasas and earned all-district honors for Jack Watson and Glen Watkins. Watson named MVP for 1942, engraved on the Jaycee trophy. Watkins called district’s best player. Gold basketball awards go to Watkins, Watson, Brown, Hartley, Burnham, Pridgeon, Parks. Returning in 1943: Hartley, Pridgeon, Parks. Washington reports President Roosevelt ordered men aged 45 to 64 to register on April 27 for possible non combat service. About 15 million in this group are expected to register. some may later be assigned to essential war work. Brig. Gen. Hershey stressed the need for accurate manpower control and placements. The 20 to 44 group registered February 16. the World War draft last October 18 enrolled 21 to 85. Registration covers US and territories with few exemptions.

Airplane Observation Posts To Be Ready April 10
County Judge J B Harrell says San Saba county must complete 18 to 19 airplane observation posts by April 10. After officer instruction and practice tests, posts may operate 24 hours daily under the third Interceptor Command in Florida with warnings relayed via the San Antonio Signal Office. Voluntary staffing would total 75 to 100 people for 5 to 6 hours per day, shelters provided locally, and nearby phones ensured.

Sewing Room Closes Tuesday in Ninth District

First Llano Casualty is Reported as Cruiser Sunk
Llano, March 21. News of Llano county's first war casualty came when Shirley Williams learned his nephew Roger Barnett of Kingsland, a 22 year old fireman aboard the cruiser Houston, went down with the ship during a naval battle last week. Barnett had joined the navy in February 1938 and was the son of Mr and Mrs B H Barnett now living in Oklahoma City. Mr and Mrs Ed Anderson of Morro Bay visited with Mr and Mrs W R Payne this week. Mrs Anderson and Mrs Payne are sisters.

A Surplus Marketing Administration report from Austin shows San Saba County received 1941 surplus commodities with an estimated retail value of 66038.96, including food items and 80 912 garments. On average 400 families per month benefited, with items donated to state relief agencies for low income families. Dr. R. C.
