Humphries Trial Goes to Jury in Mills County Case

Charles Humphries of Mills County faced trial in district court this week on charges related to an assault on a 14 year old San Saba County girl along the San Saba Richland Springs highway on April 16 1956. The case featured testimony from the girl her mother Dr F W Farley and Bill Nalls with defense calling several Goldthwaite witnesses and the defendant and his mother testifying. The jury was impaneled with 12 members and district judge Thomas C Ferguson presiding. The State did not request a passing penalty and the defense sought a suspended sentence if found guilty.

Chamber of Commerce Meets to Prep San Saba Rodeo

Chamber of Commerce members gather at Rogan Field tonight for a hamburger supper at 7 p.m. A progress report on the Rogan Field rodeo arena is due, with volunteers able to stay after for pen and chute work. The San Saba County World Championship Rodeo enters its eighteenth year under local sponsorship.

A 4 PM parade Thursday June 14 marks the start of the 18th Annual San Saba County World Championship Rodeo. Co chairs Bess Patterson and Louis Crump expect float entries from nearby towns with duchesses invited. out of town judges to award ribbons and merchandise prizes in multiple divisions.

Winner rides in the street parade next Thursday and earns an engraved belt buckle. County Old Settlers To Meet June 28

The San Saba County Old Settlers Association will hold its annual reunion as a basket picnic on Thursday June 28 in the Bagley pecan bottom. W L White president said speakers and other program details will be announced later. The reunion date was set at a Saturday meeting in San Saba.

Behrns Ex-Students plan a reunion at the Cherokee school building with former West Texas Normal and Business College attendees gathering to renew memories. Senator T J Kelbrook of Austin will serve as master of ceremonies. Free coffee and cake will be served by Methodist Church ladies as the event concludes. About 55 ex-students registered last year with families and friends joining.

The Palace Theatre will close on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the rest of the month. Movies scheduled at the Palace on those days will instead be shown Tuesday and Wednesday at the Corral Drive-In in San Saba.

Ten Scouts to Attend Camp in San Saba Area

Carter Killed in Plane Crash Near San Saba

Knight Carter of San Saba was killed when a plane crash occurred near Fork Shackdon. Survived by his wife and two children, he served in World War II and attended local high schools. Funeral plans were not known at press time.
