J Churchwell, about 35, died after a rapid illness from an abscess on the brain following boils on his nose. He was taken to Temple hospital Friday and died Saturday. Modern Woodmen of America conducted funeral rites in Cat Claw area with large attendance. He leaves a wife and aging parents and several brothers. Mrs R J Vidler arrived from Belton to join her husband and help establish San Saba home. Vidler serves as assistant district deputy for Modern Woodmen.
San Antonio reports on February 22 that Charles Schreiner, Kerrville banker and wool merchant, donates 250000 dollars and 140 acres to found a preparatory boys school at Kerrville after peace. Gift to delay until peace, school under Presbyterian Texas synod trustees, fund held by a five person board including Dr. R E B Vinson of the University of Texas. Also notes F M Carson and Thelma Carson visiting Lampasas and J E Carson household. Meatless day urged with one Wheatless and one Meatless meal daily.
Official statement of financial condition as of December 81, 1917 for the San Saba Building and Loan Association published in the San Saba News on February 28, 1918. It lists resources including loans on real estate and stock pledged, accrued interest, stock installments due, real estate suspense, and cash in depository. Also notes cash on hand. Ed Woodall of Hillsboro pressed Texas officials to boost peanut production citing fats and protein yields from peanuts versus cotton. The piece notes peanut flour as a wheat substitute, urges cultivation of at least one million Texas acres, and highlights food administration goals amid wartime shortages. It also reports President Wilson setting Next season wheat price at 2.20 per bushel for No.1 Northern spring with regional differentials to drive planting and stabilize markets.
Mrs C C Colburn died Thursday at age 70 with measles and pneumonia. Funeral and burial were at Ft O O F cemetery led by Rev J Tanner. Survived by husband and son Watson Colburn. A Live Oak Methodist church member since 1883, she was known as a noble Christian. Zeane Hominy notes mourners as W R Harris offers condolence.
A 1920s style notice proclaims five million dozen eggs added to the food supply by a new order banning killing egg laying hens. It bans killing hens and prohibits transport of hens eggs or carcasses, with penalties at the food administration. Roosters may be slaughtered and non laying chickens remain available to consumers. The piece cites Farmer and Ranch use and a byline “Jaffer” with W. R. Harris coffee reference.
An American front report says enemy air control over the American sector is complete. German planes fly over the lines almost at will, taking pictures and observations at about 3,000 meters. American officers are barred from naming or quoting personnel.
Sunday morning wreck near Brady injured Hugh Bible who died Tuesday night from crushed chest after being thrown beneath a car that toppled on him. He left a wife and three children. Remains brought to Holt with Masonic honors for burial Wednesday. Dr Buck of the State Department of Education visited San Saba high school and will report findings to the superintendent. J D Wilkerson of Coleman county eyed a new home and praised San Saba county during a Monday visit.
Mrs. Lauterstein receives a letter from her aunt in Vilna dated October 26, 1914. Censored in Russia and Germany, the long transit finally ends as the letter is allowed to proceed to America. The aunt notes Vilna’s repeated captures between Russian and German forces, reflecting wartime volatility.
