The annual Boy Scout Roundup drive nears its end as plans form for the Red Cross fund campaign. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, president of Columbia University, urges support for educational, social, and humanitarian organizations funded by voluntary contributions. He cites Red Cross as a prompt ally for armed forces and veterans and a civilian disaster relief agency, calling for continued support.
An East Texas man, John Bolton, 85, was slightly injured Sunday afternoon when his car went out of control on a highway south of Cherokee. The vehicle left the road, tumbled into a roadside ditch, vaulted a fence, and landed in a thicket.
Football jackets issued to 22 letter men three reserves and about 18 junior players in San Saba schools. Coaches manager sweetheart pep leaders and junior squad coach also receive jackets. Regular players wear worsted wool jackets purple body gold sleeves and a gold S with District Champs. Junior squad wear gabardine jackets.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Allen 46, of Star Route San Saba were held at Tow Valley Cemetery. She died Friday in a Galveston hospital after years of illness born December 26 1902 in Mississippi. Survivors include husband and three sons Frank Jr James Bailey and Johnnie Barnes Allen all of San Saba and brother Carl Seawright of Mason.
San Saba High School journalism class and instructor Miss Katherine Peel toured The News mechanical department to learn how a newspaper is printed. Students included Shannon Gregg Yvelle Judkins Betty Lambert Margery Lancaster Leonis Lee Mildred Moore Marcell McCoury Pat Mee Jean Neal Vernelle Stafford Henry Teague Bobby Arbelger Dougal Cameron Cloyd Edmon son Dick Felts Tommy Hall Billy harles McDaniel Cyrus Reynolds and Bobby Robersom.
Four youths appeared in juvenile court Tuesday before County Judge Jack Miller for burglary related charges. All were released under varying probation terms. The October term Grand Jury, recalled for special theft investigations, included J. H. Thaxton Alex Casbeer H B Sansom C Pool H D Chadwick O B Harkey T Earl Parks Roy B Ware W W Longmire Claude Golden S L Kirk and Floyd McRorey. Tink Hamrick to act as door bailiff and R B Singleton as riding bailiff.
San Saba voters will elect a mayor and two councilmen on April 5 to complete the city administration. City Clerk Reeves Kuykendall says no candidate tickets have been submitted yet. Petitions to place names on the ballot must reach the clerk at least 10 days before the election. Current council members include Burrel Park, Hudson Kelly, and Charney Little, with Park and Little serving by appointment and Little succeeding Truman G. Holladay about ten months ago.
San Saba Lions Club members and wives attended a ladies night and charter night at the Hangar Cafe in Goldthwaite. Mullen club received its charter from Jack Welch of Brownsville, with district 2-E officials and Lions International representatives present. Attendees came from Lometa, San Saba, Brady, and Llano, led by San Saba president Louis Crump and H. V. Felts among others.
Frank R. Rundell of Austin, Grand Master of the Odd Fellows in Texas, will direct the program at the San Saba lodge on Tuesday March 15. About 15 new members are to be initiated with a degree team provided. Lodge members from Brownwood Bangs Comanche and De Leon will attend as guests amid hospital construction in San Saba County.
Legionnaires gather Friday at 7 PM in the school lunch room for the American Legion session. Fried chicken served. Harry Shapiro, post commander, says important business concerning the softball park will be transacted.
Remodeling work is underway this week on the ground floor of the Odd Fellows building on the north side of the courthouse square. Partitions have been removed, floors are being repaired, the building is being re wired and walls and ceilings will be painted and repaired. The outside front will be repainted and plaster work scheduled at the rear. Cap Aubrey is in charge of the work.
Rain measured .87 of an inch on Tuesday night with several areas reporting totals around one inch. San Saba month to date reaches 1.03 inches while January rainfall totals four inches, with Algentia 0.90 Bend 1.50 Chappel 0.58 Harkeyville 1 Cherokee 0.73 Richland Springs 1.25, reflects county variability.
Reports from 80 Boy Scout fund volunteers in San Saba show 10 to 12 contributors turning in donations totaling about $200, according to L. C. Ward, the drive chairman, with progress described as fair.
J. W. Shook purchased five purebred Aberdeen Angus cows and four bulls from EH J Carroll of Lometa in a recent cattle deal.
Mrs Will Elmore, who suffered a heart attack on February 12, is reported to be much improved and able to be out of bed part of the time.
Red Cross fund campaign to raise 2200 in March in San Saba county begins with D A Cameron Jr. as general chairman. Mrs G A Arbelger named residential chairman and Bubba Walker business district chairman. Additional workers for other towns will be named next week.
J. M. Bearden was elected chair man of the San Saba County Softball Association at a Wednesday meeting to plan the 1949 season. Harry Shapiro was elected secretary. A tentative date for the 1949 softball tournament opening was set for April 16.
A 15 day revival begins this Sunday with morning services at the First Baptist Church. Rev. O. D. Welch of Junction will preach and Rev. D. M. Phillips of Mason will lead singing. Services are at 10 30 am and 7 30 pm with prayer services for men women and young people each night at 7 o clock. Everyone is invited to attend.
Local talent will perform Laff It Off a musical comedy at the school gymnasium next Thursday and Friday nights March 3 and 4 under the San Saba VFW and American Legion sponsorship. Miss Robbie Atchison from Alabama will direct and provide chorus costumes with about 100 locals expected to participate, per Mrs. Bess Patterson who assists the director.
Lampasas and San Saba led a tight district double round robin while Llane joined them in the chase. San Saba beat Mason 31 to 15 to clinch district titles with Lampasas undefeated in district play and Llane sharing second after last week’s upset by Liano.
County tax assessor-collector Brantley Barker urged car owners to buy 1949 license plates early to avoid lines. Plates can be attached as soon as purchased, changing the former rule that prohibited attachment before March 1. Owners should bring title and 1948 receipt. purchases must occur in the owner’s county.
Luther Eller a Fairview resident underwent brain tumor surgery at Scott and White Hospital in Temple on Thursday of last week. A second operation Monday halted a siege of hiccups and he is now much improved. Eller had a similar brain operation about 13 years ago.
His Honor, the Mayor of San Saba, Mr Park, was honored with a 20 year fire department discharge after the recent election of new members. A Waxahachie native born November 15, 1896, he led city administration since 1948 and held roles in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and American Legion. He co-founded early civic service, ran a Chevrolet agency, and served in World War I.
A gasoline truck fire during unloading Friday afternoon at Richland Springs High School destroyed the bus shed and one school bus. Damage estimated at 8000 dollars. Gas truck driver Jim Munsell and bus driver Noble Till were slightly burned. Six other buses outside the shed were saved by quick action. Several tires and tools were lost.

Foundation holes for the San Saba County Hospital were drilled and widened until rains Tuesday night halted progress. Foreman Milton Simon said a small batch of concrete was poured Monday for the architect's approval, with work to resume Monday if rain stops.
The City National Bank and Sin Saba National Bank will close on Wednesday, March 2, in observance of Texas Independence Day.
Arlie Dillard and his uncle Ernest R. B. Rumbo along with Thehna Fish provided statements to District Attorney Sam Connally alleging Rumbo’s involvement in the April 5 1948 theft of 35 turkeys from Ward Meckle and earlier autumn 1946 thefts. McKee resident three miles north of San Saba near Highway LG and Jerry's Branch, three were arrested February 11 and turned over to Brownwood authorities. The woman was released. Rumbo remains jailed on theft charges across several counties with admitted thefts.
Residents of San Saba and nearby areas may meet a Austin Social Security office representative at the San Saba Welfare Office on March 2 at 11 00 a.m. The session offers help to file benefit claims obtain new and duplicate Social Security Cards and check wage records.
