Mrs B J Park says underprivileged pupils may start receiving hot noon lunches next week if the community donates dishes and utensils. 260 china pieces 190 silverware 65 glasses and large cooking utensils are still needed, with Friday as the deadline.
The NYA funded sidewalk project in San Saba ended Tuesday at 4 30 p m on orders from Austin. Local supervisor Bob McConnell said hundreds of homes benefited from cheaper sidewalk, curb and gutter work by NYA labor, with Dan Holland in charge of about thirty youths earning wages. Some projects remain awaiting funding for potential revival if Congress extends appropriations.
Miss Ruth Gregory of Van Alstyne Texas and a graduate of Denton State Teachers College becomes a new teacher in the San Saba schools. She succeeds Mrs. H V Felts who resigned and will teach seventh and eighth grade English and World History at the high school. She rooms at the J H Baker Sr home.
San Saba sees rapid new home construction as growth continues this spring and summer. Photos show efforts including duplexes for Rev. Sam D. Taylor and homes for J. Van Sadler, Buster Martin, Frances Prichard, Andie Grace, Dougal Cameron, and others nearby. Additional prospects include homes planned for W. W. Wilkerson and Sam Isham, with more on the way near the J. T. Ragsdale property.
San Saba Jaycees hosted a neighborly goodwill meeting last Thursday with 180 attendees including Chambers of Commerce reps from Brady Goldthwaite Lometa Lampasas Llano and Richland Springs. Col Homer Garrison State Director of Public Safety gave the keynote on highway safety and crime prevention.
A mix of rain and snow Thursday night and Friday morning added moisture to county farms and ranches. The snow carried more moisture than earlier falls, with Mrs. W F Sullivan reporting .15 of an inch of moisture that night.
District Engineer Leo Hhlinger of Brownwood has urged the State Highway Dept to hard-surface the four mile section of State Highway 81 from Cherokee Creek north of Cherokee village to the Llano County line. The paving may be let soon and could be San Saba County’s first state paving unless the 8 mile north San Saba stretch gains priority.
Field investigation on 8 miles of highway north of town began Wednesday February 14 and topping will start in 30 to 50 days. Construction will be base with asphalt top. A WPA project using local labor with about 60 workers. Walter E. Gates, chairman of the Jaycee Highway Committee, reports.
In San Saba County 2,668 of 3,878 residents had paid poll taxes by January 31 with 118 exemptions for new voters, totaling 2,786 eligible voters. January payments added 2,826 voters. about 1,092 of voting age remain nonqualifying due to unpaid poll taxes.
The Economy Dry Goods Store in San Saba reorganizes as the Economy Dry Goods Co Incorporated affiliating with six Texas stores. Oscar Tannebaum of Greenville becomes president. Bernard Lenowitz moves to San Saba as general manager. HH Bernstein and son Joe remain active. staff retained. A sweeping store-wide sale opens to clear shelves for new spring stock as plans for growth are announced. Bill Akins arrives from Hillsboro to help set up the sale. five thousand bills have been printed for the announcement.
The San Saba News announces a REA meeting at the China Creek club house on Thursday evening February 22. A Rural Electric Cooperative of Brady representative will explain methods to secure rural electrification for China Creek Plainview Live Oak Fairview Wallace Creek and Algerta. Citizens of these communities are urged to attend and hear the details of this important advancement.
County Supt BE L Oliver received a message from deputy state superintendent G D Holbrook announcing that State Supt of Public Instruction L A Wood of Austin will hold a meeting here on Tuesday February 20 at 4 in the district courtroom at the county courthouse. All school people and the public are invited to join in a discussion of local and state educational problems.
More than 160 members and guests from eight counties attended the San Saba Production Credit Association 8th annual stockholders meeting on February 12 at the county courthouse. W R Payne presided as president, reports were given by Janet Springs and secretary-treasurer W Garbee, showing loans of 620000 in the past year and membership growth from 8877 to 43688. Directors W R Payne H D Bradley J B Epperson Maryin McMillian and Ed Young served. Bradley and McMillian terms expired and were replaced by H D Winters and J A Holland. The PCA is cited as a key factor in regional agricultural and livestock development through low-interest farm loans.
City tax payments on the 1939 tax roll totaling 17,408.40 show a year late payment pattern with about 25 percent paid to date. Ralph Whittington, city clerk, reported to the City Commission that 14,049 has been paid on the 1939 taxes. The 1939 roll increased by nearly two thousand dollars from 15,947.84 in 1938.
Mrs O F Grumbles of Harkeyville died early Monday after a brief illness. Born in 1900, she leaves a husband and eight children. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Wallace Creek cemetery.
The 8th Annual San Saba County Boys livestock Show comes to Rogan Field on Tuesday with calves lambs and pigs. About 60 dry fat and milk fed calves 80 fed lunches 100 pigs and 50 plus sheep are entered from San Saba Cherokee and Richland Springs competing for 3250 in cash prizes hung up by the Junior Chamber and 4-H clubs. Judge R M Milholm of the Soil Conservation Service San Angelo returns for judging. Judging begins 10 am with a Calf Fitting demonstration at 2 pm by Mason County 4-H boys under Frank Newsome. County agents teachers and breeders expected to attend and assist. Hereford breeders plan to display herd sires. Rogan Field offers superior accommodations and a very large crowd is anticipated.
The Wiley B. Murray American Legion Post of San Saba signs with Universal Production Co of Iowa to present the first sound film of Golgotha a passion play on Sunday March 10 at the school gym auditorium. The production cost over 1 000 000 with European churchmen funding and large European talent. Matinees are planned with likely two evening showings to meet expected crowds.
At the Wiley B. Murray Post of the American Legion the regular monthly meeting was moved from the second Friday to the first Friday night of each month. The next meeting will be Friday night March 1st. Commander Fay Easly and Adjutant Hugh Henry urge a full turnout to discuss matters of importance to the Post.
