Last Rush Made for Poll Taxes
San Saba County saw a late surge in poll tax payments, rising from a little over a thousand to 1266 on the final day Thursday March 31, per Sheriff Brantley Barker. Six exemptions were issued for persons reaching 21 this year, lifting known voting strength to 1272, with about 400 older residents not required to pay or secure an exemption.

Roper Rites Held Sunday for 93YearOld Richland Springs Resident
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Willie Roper 93 of Richland Springs at the Bowser community Methodist Church with Rev. Mitchell Smith officiating. She died Friday February 8 after about two weeks illness. Surviving are son Elbert Roper and three sisters. Burial followed at Varga Chapel Cemetery under Howell-Doran Funeral Directors.

Funeral services for Walter Crouch 78 retired Richland Springs farmer were held at the Baptist church in Richland Springs at 2 p.m. Monday Feb 11 with Rev Dr Tennison of San Saba officiating assisted by Rev J L Bass Crouch died at the State Hospital in Austin Feb 10 Surviving are two sisters and two brothers Mrs Ira Locker of Glenview Mrs Joe Eckert of Goodrich BC Crouch of Brownwood and E C Crouch of Greenville A native of Waco born July 10 1878 he was the son of J A Crouch and Martha Ann Barnett He came to this county as a young boy and lived here most of his life He married Mae Brice April 17 1901 near Locker His wife preceded him in death Pallbearers were W H Lewis Mariam Walsh Hiram Locker Harold Hendricks Burlie Burleson and Raymond Lewis Burial was in Richland Springs Cemetery Howell Doran funeral directors of San Saba in charge Mrs Odessa Gage and sons of San Angelo visited his mother Sunday Mrs Homer Edmondson spent the weekend with relatives at Amarillo

Tragedy hits Cherokee as 15-year-old Donnie Yates dies
Donnie Yates, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Yates Jr., was fatally injured in a car wreck east of town. Funeral services were held in Howell-Doran Chapel in San Saba Saturday and burial was in Hanna Cemetery. The community extends sympathy while local residents and visitors are noted in a broad social roundup of recent events and travels Across Cherokee and nearby towns.
