Ousts Rolters Church Plans for New Building

The Church of Christ on Wallace street plans a modern church, but all bids were rejected after lowest bids exceeded 17 000 dollars. Architect E M Mills of Brownwood to revise plans within 15 000 000 cap as Elder Clem Hoover leads drive for a beautiful new building for the town and congregation.

Hillman Birds Return From All-American Turkey Show

Hillman birds on exhibit at the All-American Turkey Show in Grand Forks North Dakota arrived home Wednesday in fine shape. Mr Hillman learned unofficially he had won championship for best display from Texas and had sold a $100 turkey tom.

San Saba Man Elected Vice President of Mutual Associations

J Mitch Johnson of San Saba was elected vice president and a director at the state meet of Mutual Life Insurance Associations in San Antonio. He serves as secretary of the Sin Luba Mutual Life Association and president of the Heart of Texas District Mutual Association. Next state meeting will be held in Amarillo.

Street paving program will be launched

The San Saba Chamber of Commerce endorses progressive paving of city streets and calls for a bond election. A committee comprising Dr. H. H. Taylor, Dr. G. A. Wilson, J. Mitch Johnson, C. B. Mrs J Mitch Johnson, county organizer for the Parent-Teacher Association, organized the Algerita P T A last Friday afternoon at the school. Mrs J W McKown was elected president, Mrs Smithhart vice president, Mrs George Walker secretary treasurer, and W Prof McCutchen supports the movement. A large turnout of local citizens approved making it one of the county’s five strongest groups.

Edward Johnson enters race for 35th District Attorney

J Edward Johnson of Brownwood formally announced his candidacy for district attorney of the 35th Judicial District which includes Brown McCulloch Coleman Runnels and Concho counties. A San Saba native and Baylor Law School graduate he previously served as Brady county attorney and assistant district attorney under Walter A Early who plans to retire after his term. Johnson campaigned in San Saba with his parents and is running in the Democratic primary. A separate item notes a wreck on the San Saba Cherokee highway involving a Dodge Sport Coupe and a chicken truck, with the car damaged and the driver jailed. Fire destroys Lanham barn in San Saba Valley

A major blaze destroyed the large Lanham barn on J. L. Lanham's farm near San Saba. Discovered at noon, the fire consumed 600 bushels of corn and 8 to 10 tons of cotton seed. Estimated total loss about 3500 dollars with only light insurance. the barn was among the valley's largest and best built.

Lions Club Hosts Football Boys Guests Next Tuesday

The Lions Club Tuesday lunch featured a casual exchange about town and club spirit. Members praised the "know San Saba" program directed by Lion Hamnet. Next Tuesday the high school football coach and players will be guests with an entertaining program planned.

Texas Man Killed Near Boston in Coast Guard Service

A message to Mrs. Frank Edwards announced that her brother Victor Harris was killed in line of duty. A Texas Coast Guard captain in command of a ship chasing rum-runners died in Boston. Harris had served nearly ten years and was a respected officer. He was from Santa Anna and brother to Mrs. Edwards of San Saba. Tom Murray of Schreiner Institute returned home for the weekend. Mrs. John Seiders was taken to Brownwood hospital for a potential operation.

Sheriff Finds Ragsdale's Stolen Car in San Angelo

Sheriff received word from San Angelo Police that Jimmie Ragsdale s Chevrolet was found on a street there. The car had been stolen from in front of the First Methodist Church in San Saba about three weeks earlier. Ragsdale reportedly chased the car Wednesday. it was described as pretty well worn.

Poll Tax Receipts Shine Amid County Totals This Year

County figures show 2735 poll tax receipts issued this year by Collector Moore for 1930, up from last year’s 2884. Auto licenses total 1611, about 500 short. Officials warn a adjustment period followed by stricter enforcement, with calls for universal payment of taxes to ensure equal protection of life liberty and property.

In an adjourned morning meeting the San Saba Cemetery Association stockholders elected directors for the ensuing year. Named directors include Mrs W F Sullivan, Mrs J Mitch Johnson, Mrs W A Smith, Mr N C Walker, Mr W R Doran, Mr F B Hall, and Mr W H Hinyard.

Texas Democratic executive committee barred as candidates in the 1930 primary any who bolted the 1928 presidential nominee. The 21 to 9 vote also allowed the balters to vote. Senator Thomas B. Love of Dallas challenged the ruling as void, while a local Negro delegation sought entry to press their case for participation.
