City officials after a Board of Equalization meeting announced higher post property tax values in San Saba. The plan adds roughly 200 000 to the 1947 valuation to generate about 3000 in annual taxes for maintenance repairs. PTA Sponsors Medical Exams For Preschool Children

The PTA Summer Roundup offers free medical and dental exams for all preschool children in the San Saba Independent School District. It will be at the school gym Friday afternoon August 27 starting at 3 o'clock. Doctors and dentists donate services. parents with new school entrants should cooperate and bring an older accompanied guardian to provide health history.

School Election At Locker Contested Over Consolidation

Taxpayers in Locker Common School District No 3 contest the July 10 consolidation referendum with Richland Springs Independent District. Petition cites improper conduct by officials and ineligible voters. A district court hearing is expected late next week.

Town Will Not Observe V-J Day in San Saba

Nearly all business houses in San Saba will stay open on V-J Day Saturday August 14 despite an earlier agreement to observe the holiday. Jaycee secretary Slim Cobern said merchants were unclear if stores would close and noted conflicts as some signed without realizing the day fell on the week’s busiest shopping day.

The 1948 Armadilla football schedule is set with nine games on home or away fields. District 22-A games will be played four at Rogan Field and three at opponents’ venues, plus two away practice games. Camp meeting opens Friday at Cherokee Creek site

Services at Texas oldest camp meeting begin Friday near Chappel on Cherokee Creek with Rev. D. D. Hogan as evangelist and E. D. Keeney as song reader. The event runs through August 29, preserving old-time preaching and singing while modern Arbor replaces the original open-air setup.

Burnam Heads to Washington for Pecans Conference

W A Burnam president of the Texas Pecan Growers Association leaves for Washington D C to join a conference with the Marketing Division of the Department of Agriculture and the Commodity Credit Corporation. Texas attendees include W S Price Jr of Kerns and J L Rainey of San Angelo. The group seeks federal price support similar to peanuts and other crops. Mrs Burnam accompanies him for several days in the capital after the meeting.

Services At Cherokee And Spring Creek Set

Rev. W. S. White, pastor of Methodist churches in Cherokee and Spring Creek, announced this week that the meeting at Spring Creek will continue through next Sunday and invited surrounding communities to attend. Rev. T. W. Hogan will conduct services at Cherokee in White's absence.

Ford to Open Law Offices in Burnet

Campbell Foard, San Saba county attorney since 1941 with a break during military service, will move to Burnet and open law offices in early September. Offices will be in the Yarbrough Building. He will resign as county attorney when move arrangements are finalized.

Pat Beckner Recovering After Gravel Pit Cave-In

Pat Beckner, 27, son of Mrs Julia Beckner of San Saba, is resting in a Temple hospital after a skull fracture from a cave-in at the Mackie pit north east of town. He was waist-deep in gravel when the rock ledge fell. Companion Dean Maxwell, 18, was buried to his knees but freed himself with Beckner pulling him clear before help arrived.

Mrs Alpha Dick Dies at Santa Anna

Funeral services for Mrs Alpha Dick mother of Rader Dick of San Saba were held Wednesday afternoon at the Santa Anna Methodist Church. She died at her Santa Anna home on Tuesday. A Melton native, she married A T Dick in Bell County in 1895 and had resided in Santa Anna since 1908.

Jaycee Membership Meeting Tonight in San Saba

San Subu Jaycees will hold a brief membership meeting tonight at 7 in the Jaycee building. Supper features cold cuts and potato salad. A discussion on the rat eradication program is planned, per Secretary Slim Cobern. The poison bait crew is due in San Saba Monday. There is no after-dinner speaker and the meeting adjourns in time for softball games.

Rancher Barton's Death While Tending Livestock Near San Saba

Henry Thomas Barton 67 died of a heart attack about 7 3 Friday morning while tending livestock in a pasture near his home six miles south of San Saba. Funeral services were held Sunday at Adams Funeral Home in Marlin with Rev. Wright officiating. Surviving are his widow Myrtle Hickman Barton of San Saba, a daughter Mrs Carroll Pearce, a son Henry G Barton of Marlin, and three brothers Lloyd, Jim both of Marlin and Lt Barton of Houston. Burial was in Martin.

Library Adds Ten New Books To San Saba County Shelf

The San Saba Study Club has donated ten books to the San Saba County Library, announced by librarian Mrs. Wince Brown. DDT Fogging Machine To Be Here Next Week

Brownwood reports its first polio victim last week and uses the fogging machine currently. Local Jaycees have not set a date to receive the equipment again. The first fogging was applied on Monday August 2.

U-hone taxi and delivery service recently started by Jill Brice. Brice also owns a service station and grocery at Commerce Street and the_Blane Highway. San Saba had been without taxi service for several years.
