In San Saba the Church of Christ held a ceremony last Friday marking the groundbreaking for a new $15,000 church building. Elder E. B. House broke the dirt to commence construction while the old structure was moved off the site to continue serving the congregation during the work.
More than 200 people gathered at old Shiloh Saturday to form the Richland Springs Truck Growers Association. Plans pledge 500 acres in the sandy land belt to tomatoes, the best shipping variety, with a buyer to pay cash on delivery at the Richland Springs warehouse. E. B. Prather named president. J. W. Hand vice president. J. H. Templeton secretary treasurer. Also a drive to plant 1,000 acres of watermelons in the same belt.
San Saba Hatchery run by T. J. Cummings demonstrates beyond hatchery work by preparing to send a batch of Golden Pheasant chicks from eggs owned by E. E. Rissen. This would be the county's first pheasant hatch. Cummings notes prior hatches include ducks goblins turkeys and chicks. Visitors this week include Mines E. E. Kirkpatrick F. G. Wagner J. F. Stewart and Master Bobbie French of Brownwood at Glenule Farm with Mrs. W. R. Baxter.
The Rotary Lunch featured election of delegates to the Temple District Rotary International convention to be held April 28, 23 and 24 with over 300 delegates expected. President E. E. Fagg and Secretary Roy McCall plan to attend both days. Clarence Dofflemyer, Palace Theatre proprietor and club’s first president, praised the Boy Scout Troop with Palace passes on select nights. Ebert Thompson of McGregor Rotary Club and J. M. Binford of Dallas attended as visitors.
Llano editors Will Collins Bill Collins and the town invite the fourth estate for a full day of activities in Llano Texas with a noon luncheon hosted by Chas Milliger and Grady Faubion delivering welcomes Jimmie Smith of Snyder will discuss regional press association leadership and Bra Buckner will send greetings from South Texas all in a busy planning day as editors sign in walk barefoot on Dancer Mountain and across Barryman field if they answer roll call
Logan S. Hardy and E. G. Myers have leased the Motor Inn Filling Station, plan a full automobile repair shop, inviting the public to call on them for any in their line.
Bandits robbed the First National Bank of Goldthwaite at noon with guns, taking about $4,200 from cashier L. H. Harrison and customer Geo. Lewis. They escaped in a Chevrolet as a nationwide search began, with Sheriff Gravey and Deputy Miller pursuing leads.
San Saba Armadillos dropped a 3-4 decision to Lohn at Fair Park Friday then routed Rochelle 16-13 on their own field Saturday. Key batteries were Taft and R Hartley for Lohn and Hoover and Hartley for Rochelle. Rochelle visits Fair Park next Friday for a decisive fourth meeting.

Legionaires and wives enjoyed an informal program at Mac's Cafe with over 60 attendees. George Hughes of Austin, assistant adjutant and Legion News editor, spoke delivering a strong message. Ladies Auxiliary organization was formed for Wiley B. Afur gay Post with officers named and a membership committee listed. The Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 has exceeded its quota per headquarters.
The debate over improved mail service between San Saba and Llano centers on a proposed schedule change. Currently mail leaves Cherokee each morning and returns in the afternoon, forcing an all night layover for Llano to San Saba mail or detours via Temple and Austin. The plan seeks a more direct Cherokee route while noting Cherokee residents already receive daily mail from both directions.
Special to the News the newly organized County Council of Parent Teachers Associations held its first regular meeting Friday April 11 at 10 am in the county courthouse San Saba. Mrs. E B Prather presided after group singing and invocation with reports on district meeting Mason and the origin and purpose of PiTA work.
The Cherokee district announces its annual school fair for next Saturday, April 19, featuring Llano band music, exhibitable school work across departments, and a ground dinner. An afternoon baseball game between Cherokee and Llano precedes a night program headlined by the comedy Aunt Billie from Texas, inviting all to attend.
W. L. Newlin of Burnet passed through Tuesday en route to see his ill mother in Coleman. Edward Johnson, assistant district attorney of Brownwood, visited his parents in San Saba last week.
The Chamber of Commerce and the City Council discussed a pavement bond issue with Mayor Walker and commissioners. They expect about five miles of paving including the public Square, with 50 50 state highway aid possible if bonds pass. Burleson to publish information for residents. Western Union space offered by Hotel San Saba. officials to meet with Express company and attend a Waco farmers meeting.
In the Central Texas Amateur League opener San Saba Wild Cats routed Belton Blues 9 to 2 at Fair Park last Sunday. Pitchers Riddle Maxcey and P. Smith led San Saba with strong defense as Terry Walker made a running grab near the fence. Starting lineups included San Saba players Riddle P Smith Doran Smith Watson Ashley Estep J Smith Walker and Belton with Hunt Barnes Loyd Trossell Barney Jones Mayfield Caldwell. Final score San Saba 9 Belton 2.
Tom G. Murray, 22, was sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary after a jury convicted him in Judge Langston King's court of robbing County Surveyor J. Stuart Boyle. Testimony linked Murray's alcohol and marijuana use to his actions. Dr. J. B. York, alienist, testified as the state finished its case, noting Murray's claimed impairment during the March 8 card party at Boyle's home.
