Fire damages Pete Berrien residence kitchen and porch

Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a blaze at the Pete Berrien home caused by an oil cook stove. The kitchen and back porch were severely burned with damage assessed as extensive.

Voters Qualified in San Saba County Reach Near 3,000

San Saba County reports 2,971 known qualified voters for the upcoming elections, plus an estimated group of eligible aged persons not required to pay a poll tax. Brantley Barker notes 2,912 poll taxes paid and 59 exemptions issued, compared with 2,572 in 1946, 2,608 in 1944, and 2,645 in 1942, with a precinct-by-precinct tabulation of taxes and exemptions.

A brisk sale of sheep and hogs Tuesday pushed the San Saba County Commission Co weekly livestock sale total to 396 008 78 with 730 head of cattle sold through the King sale under current management. The prior high was June 3 1947 when E M Brewton led a 105 000 day. The firm is now owned and operated by R B Bagley Sons and G J Mebeans.

Citizens Launch Drive To Clean Up Town By May 3

Citizens and San Saba clothing merchants promote May 3 as an official straw hat day with gala window displays and ads. With early summer heat, hat wearers already began earlier, and salesmen report many buyers asking if it is too soon to wear straw hats. After Saturday the campaign will intensify.

Louis M. Crump of San Saba was elected president to succeed Roy V. Fox on July 1. Officers were chosen at the Hotel San Saba luncheon. The group aims to attend the district convention in May at Corpus Christi. Joe Clark Jr. is first vice president and Jack Harkey is second vice president. New Floor Covering Laid In Court Room

Linoleum is installed this week in the district court room on the elevated official area. Work should be finished by the opening of the April term of court on Monday. The old floor covering will serve as aisle runners in the auditorium and to cover stair steps to the balcony. County officials aim to cut noise hindering court proceedings.

Postal workers reported mail from Lometa arrives about one and a half hours late over several days. Mail that used to come at 8 15 am now reaches the town around 8 60, due to trains running on a later schedule. Don Linn, long hospitalized at McCloskey Hospital in Temple, returned home Tuesday.

Rangers lost 8 to 5 to Leano in a Sunday exhibition at Risien Park. Hospital Plan Being Studied In San Saba County

County Judge Burns Lane said Norman Roberts of the State Board of Health is consulting Worth architects on changes to the county hospital plans. State and federal agencies requested tweaks in size and bed count due to higher costs. Three plan parts must be approved, with two already given.

San Saba Ranks Fifth in Track and Field Meet

San Saba finished fifth at the District Interscholastic League Meet in Mason while Mason and Fredericksburg led. Billy Charles McDaniel tied for first in high jump, Alfred Daens took third in the long jump, Bob Brew won third in the mile run, and Daens was third in the high hurdles as San Saba placed fourth in the 4 x yard relays. Mentors included Hartley, McDaniel, Brown, and Morvis Lindsey.

VFW To Eat Chicken Install New Officers

San Saba VFW will serve fried chicken and install new officers Friday at 7 30 pm in the school lunch room. Charles Pete Miffleton will succeed Bubba Walker as post commander. Richland Springs FFA Dominates at Tarleton Meet

Richland Springs FFA judging teams won first place banners in two of three events at Tarleton College, with livestock and poultry teams topping many schools in Area VI and 75 schools respectively. San Saba placed fourth in livestock, qualifying alongside Richland Springs for the state contest at A&M College on May 1. Kerrville won the dairy judging contest. Individual high scorers included Dan Lea of Iredell in livestock, Bernard Burns of Serreille in dairy, and Bobby Joyer Sims of Moody in poultry.

Polio Victim Evelyn Gage Improves in San Antonio Hospital

Evelyn Gage an eight year old polio victim from San Saba is reported to be out of the iron lung and showing continued improvement at a San Antonio hospital this week. Destructive hailstorm hits San Saba area

A severe hailstorm and heavy rains battered roughly two to three miles north and northeast of San Saba late Monday, with hail up to small hen egg size and rainfall up to six inches. Damage included roofs, windows, crops, and fruit trees. ground was blanketed with hail and drifted overnight.
