Superintendent designate Dr. Roger Lowney unveiled a sweeping plan creating a Curriculum Council to develop and evaluate curricular ideas. The council includes teachers, students, parents, and administrators to review proposals and coordinate subject subcommittees, with first meeting slated for October 17.
The San Marino Community Council approves a $61550 budget to fund 20 area service groups and launches the 1978 79 Community Chest drive. New officers include Dennis Dyke as vice president Betty Carriel as secretary Elaine Ferris as assistant treasurer and Benjamin Goland as treasurer. Readied with revised postage funds the plan mirrors last year with minor shifts while lists beneficiaries span Boys Club of Pasadena Camp Fire Girls and South Pasadena San Marino YMCA among others.
The Huntington Library invites San Marino residents to a Sunday open house from 2 to 5 p.m. with gallery talks, garden tours, and docent-guided library tours. Fredrick Boutin speaks on Water and the Early Development of San Marino at 2 30 p.m. Edwin Carpenter discusses No Place as Nice as the Ranch at 3 30 p.m. Residents need mailed invitations or call 21 792 6141 ext 62 for access.
San Marino High School along with Valentine and Stoneman schools displayed art in the LA County Fair school exhibit hall coordinated by Joanne Coultas. The 17 day exhibit at the grandstand entrance showcased crayons, watercolors, pen work, scratch boards and ceramics among other media.
San Marino homeowners tied to an 87 percent pro Proposition 13 vote face the 1975 reassessments. Appeals must be filed with the Assessment Appeals Board by October 2. Hearings may be arranged through the board at Hall of Administration in Los Angeles. If unchallenged, tax bills arrive November 1 with December 10 due date for the first installment. Supplemental reassessments are mailed February.
Ann Gillaspie, elected president of San Marino High PTSA, brings experience as a mother of three, former teacher at multiple schools, and PTA board roles in Carver Huntington and San Marino. A California native, she studied home economics and secondary education, taught in Bakersfield and Boulder, and now lives with husband Richard Gillaspie in San Marino. Her daughters Betsy Kathy and Suzy attend or have attended SMHS and Huntington School, reflecting deep community ties and ongoing involvement with Girl Scouts, Assistance League groups, and local clubs. She enjoys gardening, sewing, and gourmet cooking at home.

Twelve San Marino girls outpaced 820 area competitors to earn quarter final spots in the 1979 Rose Queen and Court contest at Pasadena's Tournament House. A total of 84 San Marino entrants joined 832 regional hopefuls in the opening judging. Quarter finals see 155 girls advancing this weekend, with 50 more slated for the October 5 semifinal. Frosty Foster, tournament director, will announce quarter finalists later this week and notify winners by mail.
San Marino High football Titans set the tone for fall athletics. Maureen Bryant’s varsity and JV girls tennis routed Royal Oak High with Arcadia games upcoming. Cross country runners under Phil Ryan posted dominant wins over Bishop Amat Covina Salesian and Loyola. Pee wee football hosts Arcadia on Saturday. Girls softball opens Tuesday at Huntington Field. At a June city measure San Marino imposed a flat $300 fee for business burglar alarms and $150 for residential hookups to plug revenue gaps after Prop 13. About 63 businesses and over 300 homeowners received bills, totaling more than $25,000. City officials defend the plan while some merchants urge a sliding scale and question cost, yet many residents keep alarms, noting budget strain.
San Marino received state distributions totaling 29 713 from the 6 percent sales tax and 2 661 from cigarette tax plus 11 002 for highway use tax and 30 992 in motor vehicle fees. State Finance Director Roy Bell floated possible increases in local tax receipts next year to offset property tax losses from Proposition 13. Governor Brown and the Legislature must approve.
San Marino Titans erase a 21 7 deficit to topple top ranked Arcadia 33 27. Bert McKee rushes 24 79 and 25 yard TDs for 260 yards on 24 carries. Arcadia quarterback changes due to injury and Mohr 79 yard run plus a 20 yard TD pass highlight the loss. The Titans rally with four straight second half scores including a 79 yard capper.
