The 1997 98 state budget for California schools shows higher education funding than early 1990s but inflation adjusted per pupil funds still back to 1980s levels. A $100 million high school technology proposal died then resurfaced behind closed doors funding tech grants by district size with a per site minimum.
San Marino Scouts announce a joint trip with Partnership for Awareness to Camp Surf in San Diego from November 8 to 10. Cub Scouts and Family campers join Beach crafts swimming activities with Boy Scouts as counselors and Girl Scouts staying in cabins with leaders. Rebecca Sadun reports Samantha Johnston winner of the 1996 Ambassadorial Scholarship returned from a year in Spain. The San Marino High School and Stanford graduate spoke at a Rotary Dinner describing studies at the University of Salamanca and trips to Sicily, Morocco and Paris to compare European life with the United States.
Lorain Road between St Albans and Sherwood will be rebuilt with federal funds. Crews will scarify and apply new asphalt while one lane stays open. City manager Debbie Bell calls it effectively a new road. Bid awarded. construction dates depend on paperwork.
The SMHS Counseling Office hosted Senior Informational Night for the Class of 1998 and their parents. Marilyn Colgar shared Class of 1997 college destinations, SAT averages, and GPA data to guide students toward realistic goals. Principal Loren Kleinrock outlined the new individual class ranking system and its implications.
San Marino Police Department hosts Project KidCare at Valentine School Fair on Saturday Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free standardized photos for KiddCare ID booklets help record vital statistics to aid in locating missing children. Lt. Chris Peterson and See KidCare president Ernest Allen stress the importance of current photos in investigations and prevention.
San Marino recorded a 23 percent drop in major crimes for the year with fewer burglaries and thefts. August details include 22 thefts totaling 21 795 dollars and 121 offenses this year yielding 363 741 dollars in stolen property.
About 40 SMHS students met at the campus marquis at 7 am on Wednesday September 17 for a See You at the Pole group prayer. Senior Aileen Hong said the national event began in 1990 with Texas roots and has grown to millions of participants worldwide.
Scott Jenkins delivered checks totaling over 5000 to the San Marino Schools Foundation in support of his School Board bid. He asked supporters to donate 50 per family in place of campaign contributions, noting the aim to keep high quality education in San Marino.
Mt. Wilson Vista Council hosts its third annual Golf Tournament on October 2 at Brookside Country Club Pasadena. Sponsorships start at 1000 with 200 tee ships. 11:30 a.m. tee time 175 per player includes cart greens lunch awards dinner prizes and a 10000 hole in one prize. Proceeds fund programs facilities and volunteer training for more than 6300 girls. For information call 281994.
German school began last week for ages 3 through 12 with weekly Saturday sessions at First Lutheran Church. About 20 percent of the students reside in San Marino.
