Wallace L. Chadwick ends an eight year city council career at the September meeting. He steps down amid well wishes and appreciation from colleagues and the community.
Mayor Burnett accepted Chadwick’s resignation with regard and praised his service. Council discussed reappointing a new engineer and reconsidering a variance on a San Marino Service Station project. Police report highway speeding under control while street crews completed sidewalks and landscaping on Huntington drive and San Gabriel boulevard. Council also missed the federal veterans employment deadline and agreed to finish a Monterey road sidewalk project.
San Marino and county officials outline a $24 000 study financed from gas tax to analyze recurring failures of traffic signals while the San Marino Board of Education weighs bus service for the year. Despite 150 interested parents, only 110 have pledged 90 per student, needing 165 subscribers for a full district plan. The board may not subsidize and may route funding through a private carrier with the district acting as intermediary.
San Marino police arrest three more 14 year old youths in the bike theft case that has troubled the city for a year. The juveniles were charged with stealing bikes and receiving stolen property. Police recovered five 10 speed bicycles in the investigation begun September 1.
The City Council of San Marino recognizes Wallace L Chadwick upon his resignation effective September 6 1971. Chadwick served since October 1963, providing engineering expertise and valuable service to residents. The council applauds his admirable record and wishes him well in future endeavors. August saw ten residential burglaries raising the year count to 68, up 24 from the same eight months in 1970. The commercial burglary rate fell, while overall Part I offenses rose to 176 for the year through August, with $82,606 in property stolen Jan–Aug and $60,189 from burglaries. Police recovered $16.55 in local property and $18.04 for outside agencies, with 721 adult and 158 juvenile arrests last month across various offenses.
SMHS Parents Teachers Students Association opened the year with Back To School Night moved from October to next Tuesday at 7 30 pm in the auditorium. Dr Ken Bullock thanked Mrs Richard Crisp and her committee for typing enrollment cards and noted volunteers who assisted in the project.
