City Manager Keith Till says San Marino plans budget decisions soon to close an estimated 600000 shortfall. He notes potential cuts in state and county revenues and hints at possible new taxes or assessments, though leaders are reluctant to raise taxes. Council expected to set meeting dates shortly.
The San Marino Recreation Department releases its 1992 Fall Program for youths and adults with in person registration September 22 to 24 from 1 to 4 30 at the Recreation Office 2200 Huntington Drive back of San Marino City Hall. Mail-in registration begins for the first time with walk in registration taking precedence.
San Marino High School coach Bill Maloney brings 40 varsity players to a 5 p.m. scrimmage at Tian Stadium against Covina. Returning 19 lettermen include six offensive and two defensive starters, with an experienced line led by Brian Dennis and Karl Hubman. Quarterback battle between Scott Shaw and Danny Loyd. versatile backs Matt Solomon and Tom Moreland, plus standout receiver duo Steve Park and Matt Scout.
The San Marino School District adds twelve new teachers across four campuses. At Valentine Elementary four teachers join fourth and fifth grade teams, at Carver Elementary three teachers add fourth to fifth grade, Huntington Intermediate adds two new staff for English social studies and science, and at San Marino High School three new teachers fill math speech and science roles.
San Marinans rally behind schools with numerous gifts totaling about $9,000 from recent campaigns and several donations to San Marino High School and the district. Superintendent Gary Richards notes a $400,000 budget cut and warns Prop 98 borrowing could make next year difficult while praising the community’s ongoing support.

Crist, a SMHS alumnus, previously served as teacher counselor and assistant principal there from 1974 to 1989 and later as Director of Student Activities at Temple City High School.
The San Marino Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Family Community Fair at Lacy Park on Wednesday September 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. Local merchants will be present to meet residents, entertainment and food will be available, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic. Admission is free.
San Marino postal worker David Robinson died from head injuries suffered Aug 24 when a van struck him at Alameda and Colorado in Pasadena as he rode home from work. He served 25 years with the post office and died two weeks later at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Services were held at Pasadena Alliance Church. He is survived by wife Nancy and two children.
The San Marino Book directory will reach every household in the San Marino Unified School District on Saturday September 19 from 8 am to 7 pm. San Marino High School seniors will handle delivery and update readers on new classifieds and improved content. Residents are asked to review the edition and suggest improvements for future issues. If not received, call The San Marino Book office on September 21 at 795-9603.
Perta Santley, a third grade teacher at Valentine Elementary, chosen as San Marino Teacher of the Year. She has 15 years in the district, started as a substitute, spent six years at Stoneman, and earned USC and USIU degrees. The Santleys live in San Marino with husband Tom and children Mike and Susan who attended local schools.
