Gene Perret Wins Top Humor Discovery in 1983
San Marino humorist Gene Perret was named Top Discovery in Humor for 1983 at the International Platform Association convention in Washington DC. Dan Moore announced the honor after Perret and three other humorists were judged by about 900 attendees. Perret, a longtime joke writer for Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller, later wrote for Laugh-In and the Carol Burnett Show, earning Emmys and a Writer’s Guild Award. He also writes a humor column, publishes a humorist newsletter, and authored Hit or Miss Management and How to Sell Your Sense of Humor.

Hampton joins Los Angeles Museum board of trustees
Hampton elected to the board of trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The new center, The Temporary Contemporary, opens in Little Tokyo November 18 featuring works from six major collections. A permanent building at California Plaza will open in 1985, with extensive exhibition space. Brown anticipates a smooth opening of the 1983 84 school year in the San Marino Unified School District as classes begin September 12 for K through 12. State funds plus support from the San Marino Schools Foundation may restore some cut programs. Enrollment may dip by about 2 1/2 percent. Kindergarten enrollment stands at 120. High Speed Chase Ends In Stolen Motorcycle Recovery
An 18-year-old Alhambra man led San Marino and South Pasadena police on a high speed chase before a stolen 1978 Kawasaki was recovered. The rider fled, traffic soared over 110 mph at times, a chase involving a police helicopter ended with the suspect detained behind a residence. The bike’s VIN and license plates did not match, linking the thefts to incidents in Los Angeles and Anaheim. The suspect admitted fleeing to avoid a ticket. Additional local thefts included a weed eater and a gas blower taken from gardeners, plus a home burglary through a rear door lock.
