A long dramatic reminiscence imagines a football night in Monrovia and San Marino. The narrator sorrowfully recalls a fatal crash near Huntington Drive and the enduring taunts of a loud sideline announcer as Monrovia faces San Marino in a Rio Hondo League game.
The San Marino Chapter of American Field Service will sell wrapped 6 inch red poinsettias for the holidays. Proceeds fund chapter expenses for recruiting American students to study abroad and hosting costs for San Marino High School students in activities such as dances, Yosemite Institute, Grad Night, sports, and school items. This marks the forty eighth year of participation in the AFS program. See BOOK, page A-7.
The San Marino School Board unanimously approved contracting Caldwell Architects for architectural and engineering work to complete the overdue Carver School construction. The move, urged by the community oversight committee, aims to save up to nine months of work while Carmichael & Kemp remains involved in the overall project. Board member Andy Barth emphasized no loss of confidence in Carmichael & Kemp and noted the existing relationship continues. Jeanie Caldwell clarified she is not related to the firm.
The Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson will address the San Marino Republican Club on November 19 at 11 30 a m at the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel. Peterson, founder of BOND, will discuss whether reparations are necessary and examine its impact on families and policy.
Gary L. Thomas announced Children’s Dreams Wishes and Imagination as the theme for the 114th Rose Parade with Bill Cosby Art Linkletter and Fred Rogers as grand marshals. Royal Court includes Ali Wucetich and Princesses Anjali Agrawal Heather Bell Megan MacLennan Glynn-Helene Joseph Katherine Berber and Danielle Yamamoto. Queen Ali is a San Marino High senior daughter of Peter and Cindy Wucetich. The event coincides with Club retirement of longtime treasurer Frosty Foster and highlights the Royal Court’s activities ahead of January 1 2003 parade.
Former San Marino Police Officer John Crook will get a lump sum of 130000 tomorrow and monthly 1900 payments through October 15, 2015 under a CJPIA negotiated settlement signed November 4, 2002. Crook cannot seek city employment again or be rehired. He was dismissed September 14, 2000 for allegedly falsifying a time card after disputes over due process and First Amendment claims.
The San Marino Chamber hosts its November mixer at the San Marino Public Library on Huntington Drive from 5 30 to 7 30 p m. City Librarian Carolyn Crain says guests will enjoy special activities and prizes with a raffle at 7 p m. Fees are 7 for members and 10 for non members. the public is welcome. Volunteers are sought this Sunday November 17 to construct the Little Christmas.
The 3rd Annual San Marino Tribune Drop-Off Day to benefit LAMP Community, a skid row charity founded by Frank Rice, will be held Saturday December 7, 2002 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Tribune office on Huntington Drive. Donations of clothing, non-perishable food, socks, jackets, bedding, appliances, toiletries, Walkman CD players, and other items are welcomed to support mentally ill homeless individuals. Work has begun on restoring the Lacy Park Rose Garden originally designed in 1929 by William Hertrick. The renovation, led by Steven Ormenyi with rose selections by Huntington Library rosarian Claw G. Martin, includes new roses, soil, and an irrigation system. Project to finish by early spring 2003 with support from the Lacy Marino Garden Club and San Marino Beautification Committee. San Marino Recreation offers Preschool Fun Days and other programs for youngsters and adults.
