San Marino City Club announced 2002 dinner speakers including Dr Cary Presant January 15, Dr Charles Blachi February 19, Stephen B Sample USC president in April. Also invited are Steven Koblick Huntington Library director Congressman David Dreier and motivational speaker Gordon Graham.
The San Marino Chapter of American Field Service plans a poinsettia fundraiser to cover incidental costs for hosting foreign students at San Marino High School and to support events for AFS visitors. Now in its forty seventh year, students from the district participate in the program with recent exchanges abroad. The Huntington Middle School Breakfast Committee celebrated its annual Huntington Breakfast raising funds for educational enrichment. About 800 guests attended, with PTA volunteers flipping pancakes and multiple departments hosting events.
November 11 1885 marks the birth of George S Patton and Ruth Wilson Patton in San Marino at the Wilson family ranch on what is now Euston Road. The Boy would grow to lead the Third Army in World War II and was christened at the Church of Our Savior in San Gabriel. Local historian Midge Sherwood notes his San Marino ties and early Bible study influences.
Krispy Kreme doughnuts go on sale to raise funds for San Marino High School 2002 Grad Night. Valentine School hosts Adventure Week book fair in the multi purpose room on Virginia Drive open 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday. Authors Jane West and Marlene Sway visit students for signings and questions with a bat slide presentation for 3rd to 5th graders, promoting engaging reading.
The San Marino Unified School Board will swear in Joseph Chang Jeanie Caldwell and incumbent President Andy Barth at the December 4 meeting, after they won the three open seats. John Bartos finished fourth while Warren Weber retained his Pasadena City College board seat.
San Marino's Schools Foundation leads a final effort to furnish and equip four renovated campuses with the $3 million needed. Co-Chair Kathie Kellogg stresses Race to the Finish is a one time commitment. bond money may not cover non construction costs. The campaign complements district funds and annual drives to support the education program.
Lynn P. Reithauer received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Health and Human Services. He earned a 1959 MA after UC Santa Barbara BA, taught high school, coached sports, and became a partner at Crowell Weedon & Company in LA. He also served on the San Marino City Council, including four years as mayor.
