More than 35 San Marino residents attended a Field Day at the Marietta Polled Hereford Ranch on May 18. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Jones. attendees included Richard Beedle John Bemann Frank Green Wayne Knights Paul Minnings Sam Naideths and others from San Marino.
Richard Paul Jenkins twenty one year old former San Marino resident died in a car crash on the San Bernardino Freeway. Born in Glendale he lived in San Marino before moving with his family to the Imperial Valley six years ago. He was a football letter man at Cal Poly and was attending there at his death. Funeral services were held at Mark B. Shaw Mortuary San Bernardino with interment planned at Mountain View Cemetery San Bernardino. Todd Memorial Chapel Pomona managed arrangements.
Tom Loynd 16 year old son of Mr and Mrs Hal Loynd of Lorain road will spend the summer in Finland under the American Field Service sponsorship. Loynd a junior at San Marino High School will leave June 14 board ship in Montreal June 21 stay with the Krogius family near Helsinki and return after a two month stay. He is a member of the school debate team California Scholarship Federation and is interested in sports and music. He is learning the rudiments of Finnish.
William Buckley of Homet Read will play Sid Davis in the Los Angeles State College production of Eugene ONeill Ah Wilderness. The in the round Ramona Campus Little Theater run opens Friday May 31 with performances at 8 30 nightly through June 8 except Sundays.

Herlan Thompson of Oakwood Drive will be honored June 4 in Berkeley by the Commonwealth Club of California for writing the best juvenile book in 1956. Thompson, author of Spook, the Mustang, will receive the Silver Medal of the club for the best juvenile book by a California author in 1956. Club president David D. Bohannon will present the award at a Berkeley dinner.
Superior Court Judge James G. Whyte cited three grounds for denying the petition to compel the City of San Marino to issue a variance application to SS Felicitas. The ruling outlines the judge’s legal basis and the procedural posture of the case.
San Marino High School science head Robert Fellman was named one of 90 Shell Merit Fellows in the United States and Canada for merit and leadership in chemistry. He will spend eight weeks at Stanford this summer, continuing NSF funded study and coordinating a four-teacher science department.
William Chalmers former city engineer for San Marino died May 23 at the home of Mrs. Mabel Golding in South San Gabriel after selling his Sierra Madre Boulevard home in 1955. Funeral services were in Pasadena and burial followed in San Gabriel Cemetery. He was born in Scotland in 1870 and lived a long career across England China Scotland and the United States before settling in Los Angeles in 1902. He served as San Marino city engineer from 1913. His wife Margaret died in 1953.
Seven San Marino scouts received Eagle Awards and 21 earned God and Country honors at a Court of Honor in Huntington School auditorium hosted by Troop 353 and the Exchange Club. Awards went to multiple named scouts across troops 352 354 356 358, including Palm and emergency service recognitions.
The Independent Air Pollution Foundation will relocate its headquarters on June 1 to 2556 Mission Street. President A J Gock says the move brings staff closer to Pasadena laboratories where smog research is conducted, and that the northern Los Angeles Basin area is becoming the hub of air pollution science.
Lorraine B Sechler daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Sechler of Montecito Drive was elected to undergraduate membership in the Stanford Chapter Phi Beta Kappa announced this week.
Alan Cunningham has been appointed by the SMHS journalism department to head the Titan Shield staff for the coming year. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Paul Cunningham of Melville Drive and is serving as news editor and qualified for Quill and Scroll. He succeeds Linda McDonald Po editor in chief, an honor previously held by his brother Douglas in 1955 56.
