City Council members met Wednesday evening to handle city business. John C. Miles proposed donating ten feet of ground toward Oakleigh drive improvements in lieu of taxes, but the council voted against special treatment for one taxpayer. A Tear Gun representative visited, but further action hinged on Chief Ben Parker’s recommendation.
In Los Angeles Judge Walton J. Wood presiding Swalley, a 20 year old Pasadena college student, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to attempted extortion of 3000 dollars from Mrs. F W Emery. The court scheduled July 8 for trial before Judge Charles W Fricke with alienists to assess the insanity plea. Swalley was accompanied by his parents Mr and Mrs R R Swalley from Birmingham Alabama.
Mrs Florence Lowe Barnes of San Marino who took part in the Woman's Air Derby last year will survey a new route.
The Huntington mausoleum was chosen by Mr. Huntington for his repose and his wife Arabella Duval Huntington. Construction began near his death and finished in 1929. A pioneering woman who later completed a journey to Mexico City is slated to try the Agua Caliente to Chicago air route opening. Mrs. Barnes will depart soon by plane from Agua Caliente to survey the route features.
Joseph Van Frank of San Marino was appointed engineer-clerk of Monterey Park this week on the recommendation of Geo H Pash city engineer. Van Frank will assist in office and field work for the engineering water street and building departments under the city engineer.
F S Burgess Jr of San Marino and Robert Porter of Kinear Motors flew to June Lake in the High Sierras on Friday. They reported a splendid catch of beau ties with several as large as four pounds. They returned Sunday evening elated by the trip.
Dr J D Siebert of San Marino reported Saturday that a Corona typewriter was taken from his office at 261 Colorado Street Pasadena. The theft was reported to police.
San Marino City Council heard from City Manager Stockburger of Alhambra and City Engineer Ells of El Monte about forming a joint survey of the San Gabriel Valley water and sewer situation. Thirteen cities were invited to contribute at least $600 to fund a committee of experts assessing regional health and conservation needs.
San Marino based contractor William C Crowell lands the 800000 project to build the first of four Caltech residence halls this year. Ground breaking next Monday features student body leadership and a steam shovel sod breaking. Four houses on California street will house about seventy six students with a semi basement for activities. Old dorms to be vacated and repurposed by post.
