A letter from residents urges formation of a San Marino Woman's Club to provide an outlet for civic participation and exchange. The note, printed in the Tribune, argues women deserve organization and involvement, citing interest from many residents and support from Mrs. H. D. Ivey and others.
Huntington Parent-Teacher Association hosts its final spring social event in the gymnasium at noon. The party featured fashion displays, gowns, and donated garments for Mrs. Jack Petersen and Mrs. A F Jack, with musical selections and decorations. Volunteers including Mrs K L Carver and Mrs EL HE helped organize the event and raise funds for the P T A.
Dr. Edwin Francis Gay, noted economist and Harvard professor, will join the Huntington Library research staff in San Marino in September. He retires from Harvard after more than twenty five years, bringing his expertise in economic history and contemporary American business conditions to the library.
The San Marino Studio Theatre opens tonight with Rachel Crothers Let Us Be Gay. Director Frances Douglass Cooper has cast well and the production is praised for humor and tension. Margaret Hopkins leads with dual roles in set design and acting, while Arthur Parker, Joe Hellen, and others contribute strong performances and technical work.
The piece recalls two youths who met on Nebraska prairies forty years ago and a friendship that shaped a path toward politics. One followed the Washington invitation, the other stayed, leading to years of service in Nebraska culminating in high office.
A 1520 Spanish coin with King Ferdinand VII was unearthed during digging for a new home at 1147 San Marino Avenue, north of Huntington Drive. Contractor Escherich, working for the Fred Sherrills, brought the coin to the Tribune, sparking musings on San Marino’s early days near the Old Mill and San Gabriel Mission.
Veteran judges L Harry R Archbald of San Marino and Arthur Keetch plus Frank C Collier of South Pasadena will stand for re election in the August 25 primaries. Keetch seeks Office No 1 Archbald Office No 2 and Collier Office No 4. All are described as strong capable judges and should be returned.
San Marino played twice Tuesday at Huntington School. They lost 13 to 0 to South Pasadena All Stars in five innings, then defeated Chrysler Motors of Maywood 11 to 7 in the main event. Lineup includes Ringstrom, Callahan, Hartley, McConnell, Dr Schmidt, Cronshey, Gleie, Bergonia, and Vaughn. Next week’s game is against Standard Oil Co. with one game on the schedule.
San Marino and South Pasadena schools end term on June 19 and reopen September 14. San Marino’s playground commission announces a summer program at Huntington School from June 22 to July 31 mornings except weekends. Four instructors lead crafts, manual training, and outdoor activities for boys and girls with police crossing supervision and student transport self-provided.
Tom Judd was elected president of the Boys League at South Pasadena High School in an election held May 27. His opponent was Bob Becker. He succeeds Larry Thompson as president. Other officers elected include Henry Topf as vice president Gordon Jenson as secretary Bob Wilson as treasurer. Mr Erickson will serve as faculty advisor.
The California Railroad Commission studied San Marino’s phone issue after a Thursday hearing. Citizens led by Stanley Arndt protested split service between Pasadena and Alhambra exchanges with Huntington Drive as the dividing line. Of 585 petition cards, 480 opposed current tolls. cost estimates cited include 10,600 yearly, 61,000 extra investment, and 33,150 non recurring fontover costs.
City Council chaired by Mayor Lacy awarded the 50 year gas franchise to the Los Angeles Gas and Electric Light Corporation for 2 percent of gross city revenues. Bids were opened and accepted. ordinances No 277 and 278 passed. $5,000 moved to Park Fund. 2000 street light globes receive yearly bath. protest over a girls school on Garfield avenue denied as no pending application.
William L Valentine recounted San Marino's birth at a Civic Dinner last week. He noted five votes against incorporation and Alhambra's bid to annex. Henry Huntington funded most early taxes and donated city hall property and ten thousand dollars for a park. The city began without funds and collected 97 percent of levied taxes after sending out bills.
The San Marino Garden Club will hold its year end meeting on Tuesday June 9 at 10 30 in the gardens of Mrs J T Whittemore 1928 St Albans road The program features installation of new officers Details will be announced next week’s issue
A gala San Marino civic dinner honored city clerk emeritus Harvey Joyce and local officials. About 300 residents attended at the Huntington Hotel, with Mayor Lacy and council members present. Speakers praised the city government and Joyce, and a gold watch with 18 jewels was presented to him.
Metropolitan Water District engineers compare modern reinforced concrete siphons with Roman arcades in the 390 mile Colorado River Aqueduct project. The underground pipes, buried under earth and rock, offer greater economy and protection against desert floods while delivering about 1 billion gallons daily to Southern California. Over 8600 workers are involved in the nation’s large scale system.
A well known lawyer commends the Tribune for courage in editorial "Coffin Nails As Aids to Digestion" and praises stance against cigarette advertising. The letter notes the profit motive and recalls Bryan on dollars over people and youth.
