San Marino residents and city officials will attend a farewell dinner for Chief Glenn F. McClung at the San Marino Woman's Club on Huntington Drive. Councilman Preston Hotchkis will MC. tickets must be bought in advance by Friday before the Monday holiday.
Arthur P. Hughes named Acting Fire Chief to replace the retiring Glenn F. McClung as city separates police and fire into independent units. Hughes, long in the department with a background from 1935 relief work to 1947 fireman, recently completed officer training and expressed commitment to efficient protection.
Hattie M. Weaver a member of a pioneer San Gabriel Valley family dies at home on San Gabriel Boulevard May 16. Born in Jefferson Iowa in 1872 she lived in California 40 years. Survived by husband Gordon L. Weaver and six children Norma Poland Dorothy Telfer Marjorie West Harold Weaver Paul Weaver Louis Weaver. 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services conducted May 21 by Rev Frank C. Matthews at Dubois Funeral Home San Gabriel. Interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park Whittier.
At the San Marino High School Spring Awards Night more than 50 athletes were honored. The event in the cafetorium featured awards for basketball baseball track and tennis with trophies and letters presented by athletic director Garland Lewis and assistants Jack Dusek and Charles Willard.
An editorial style passage mocks free country critics and cites contradictions about government interference time and money and education. It notes a citizen should know city council and school board members and questions the practicality of freedom without time to act. It contrasts truth and fiction with a punchy closing remark.
Official canvass shows Robert F. Trever unopposed with 72 votes in last Friday's Board of Education election. Turnout was among the smallest in recent years. Trever, currently board president, to begin a four year term after June canvass.
Dr. G. E. Norwood was named campaign chairman for Arcadia Community Hospital in San Marino. The plan calls for a 137 bed, latest design hospital on Huntington Drive across from the race track, expanding later to 300 beds. Arcadia campaign includes 300 workers with drives in Monrovia Duarte El Monte Temple City San Gabriel Rosemead San Marino and Sierra Madre.
In observance of Memorial Day most stores banks and the Post Office will close Monday. There will be no city delivery service but special delivery matter and perishable parcel post will be delivered. Collections and dispatches of mail will follow holiday schedules.
A San Marino pool fund drive shows 62,500 on hand against a 70,794 contract price. In the last weeks about 3,000 was raised, leaving nearly 8,000 to obtain from ~200 contributors, totaling over 2,400 donors. Mayor Ide and School Board President Treuer urge immediate completion and note funds must be in hand by June 4 to let the contract and hold the bid.
San Marino and South Pasadena will end the shared high school bus route next September as only about 15 riders use it. All San Marino high school students traveling to South Pasadena will use regular bus service.
Morene Stevulak, an Alhambra Police Department secretary, had her car stolen May 18 from the station lot. The San Marino Police recovered and returned the vehicle, fulfilling her faith in law enforcement. L. B. Eastman of 1022 was seen in front of his house for four days.
SMHS high jumper Bob Angell cleared 5 feet 6 inches to tie for fourth in CIF finals at Excelsior High School last Saturday. He became the first Titan spikester to reach this level in the competition after qualifying at 5 feet 8 inches in the semifinals at Carpinteria earlier in the week.
The Board of Education authorized the minimum equipment for the football squad for next year contingent on staff recommendation and available funds. The aim is to provide essential protective gear without extras, preserving the physical education budget.
A/2c Lewis E. Peterson, noted San Marino athlete, leaves Europe for Hamilton Field to steer the Air Force volleyball squad in the world finals. Now stationed with the 2nd radio squadron in Darmstadt, Germany, he helped win the Security Group title and defeat other air force teams in Europe and North Africa. The team earned a trip to the United States for the global finals in June. Peterson's parents, Mr and Mrs E M Peterson of 1832 Palmas drive, expect his arrival today or tomorrow.
Rev Walter K Robie officiated at private funeral services in Alhambra for Mrs Edna A Baughman of 770 N Granada San Marino who died Tuesday Born in Pittsburgh she lived in San Marino eight months and belonged to Calvary Presbyterian Church South Pasadena Surviving sisters are Mrs Forrest G Harmon San Marino and Mrs Claude P Walker Pittsburgh
L C Falls filed a petition for a new trial in the Huntington drive case. Superior Court set June 16 for arguments. Judge Bartlett awarded the city a 60 foot wide right of way from Bedford road to Kenilworth avenue, with Falls receiving two smaller parcels and the Graves section. Falls seeks another trial over the Bedford to Kenilworth strip in the business district.
Michael H. Loy aged 13 son of Mr and Mrs Milton E Loy of 719 Winston Avenue was thrown from his bicycle on Winston while en route to Huntington School May 20 sustaining minor scrapes and cuts. He swerved to strike the rear fender of a passing car which stopped briefly before driving away after he said he was alright.
After four weeks in the San Marino Men's Twilight Soft Ball League the Wreckers and City Club Cards share first with four wins each. Key week results include PTA Fathers Show 15 City Employees 5 on May 19 and Congregational Church 19 Scout Dads 5 on May 20. Harry Booth tops batting with 10 for 11 and .909.
Final rites for Mrs. Leah F. Hays who died May 21 at 1680 Rambro Road were held at Turner Stevens Eggleston Chapel before interment in Hillside Cemetery Redlands. A Lyons New York native she spent about 40 years in the Los Angeles area and led as past recorder and president of the Social Order of Beausceant Assembly 42. She leaves husband Raymond Hays a daughter Linda Suzanne and sister Grace Eckl of New York.
