San Marino City Club awards 16000 to high school science room

The San Marino City Club awarded San Marino High School $16,000 to build a new science room. Club president Claire Johnson presented the check to principal Dr Gary Richards during the Tuesday dinner meeting at Huntington School cafeteria. The gift includes $5,000 standard club grant plus $11,000 raised by Fathers Night performances.

Teachers of the Year honor for L A county instructor

Brian Chambers of San Marino Unified School District was among 53 Los Angeles County teachers honored at the third annual Teachers of the Year Recognition Luncheon on May 14. The event, hosted by the County Office of Education and funded by TRW, included tours and IMAX presentations with attendees such as Stuart Gothold, Ruth Bloom, and Dale Van Natta.

Parking Proposal Triggers Merchant Letter Objections

San Marino merchants led by Larry Doan and Larry Dean oppose a city parking ordinance. A memo from Nuccio Datwyler and Doan warns the plan could limit future commercial options, hurt residential values, deter new businesses, and depress commercial property values. The letter was distributed to 30 to 40 commercial property owners amid a council input period set to last 20 days.

Turnout High For Book Fair Announces Record Interest

The 3th Annual Book Fair by Friends of the San Marino Public Library drew a large crowd last Saturday with observers calling it the greatest turnout yet. Librarian Lois Devies expects final net proceeds to be between $5,000 and $7,000 after expenses are tallied.

Burglary Spike In San Marino With Four Incidents In Nine Days

San Marino saw four residential burglaries in a nine day span in May after only one in April. Crimes occurred on Los Arboles Lane Lorain Road Santa Anita Avenue Los Robles Avenue with stereo equipment jewelry and an air compressor stolen. Police note a prior decline since January and ongoing pattern of property theft including purse snatchings and a grand theft auto nearby.
