A theatre feature previews a comedy about Mrs Boucicault and a host of guests in a water production. The aging hostess plots to lure a worldly lover away from a younger rival, inviting schemes and mischief as weekend plans unfold. Page Five promises further details.
The Choral Club of San Marino presented a well received spring concert at the school auditorium. Bert J Adams served as accompanist while Mr Donner conducted, with performances including an Andante from a symphony and a rendition of Bal naoise. The program featured two groups of songs and drew enthusiastic audience reaction.
As we go to press the civic dinner honoring Harvey Joyce retiring city clerk is nearly ready. The Huntington Hotel dining room will host 250 San Marinans with a surprise speaker. Preston Hotchkis will toast San Marino figures including Mayor Richard Lacy and speakers such as William L. Valentine and James L. Beebe. A gift of a gold watch will be presented to Mr Joyce by attending citizens.
The San Marino Parent-Teacher Associations chaired by Mrs. T. H. Eggleston outline a summer play program at Huntington school from June 22 to July 31 with four instructors guiding boys and girls. Superintendent E. C. Neher details supervised Saturday play for boys at Huntington, with Ray Brice as supervisor. A packed program featured soprano Mrs. Elizabeth Lownes and four musical selections, followed by a First District Conference notice for Compton on May 29.
A City Club program at Huntington School featured Palmer Conner presiding in Carleton Tibbetts absence. Highlights included magician Arthur W. Nordstrom and deputy city attorneys Milford Springer and Harry Weber and Jack Straw leading a sing. The Swiss Echo Yodelers entertained with 15 16 and 17th century yodeling. Donald R. Warren lectured on the San Francisco Bay bridge with slides. New members J. E. Hemphill A. L. Gotterdam Charles H. Donaldson and Jack Carr Jr. joined. Civic Affairs chair Stanley Arndt reported on member survey results regarding water and electricity rates and post office service in San Marino.
At a Detroit convention of the National Society of New England Women Mrs. Edward A. Strong of San Marino chairs the legislative committee and urges renaming Boulder Dam Hoover Dam. She criticizes relief fund allocations and calls for constitutional government while delegates applaud. she is listed as a trustee.
Death from a sudden stroke occurred Tuesday night to Dr Helen Cooley a retired New York physician. She is survived by a brother Dr J H Cooley of New Jersey and a niece Mrs R M Steer of Hueneme California plus other nieces in the East. Funeral services will be strictly private with arrangements by Turner Stevens and Berry of South Pasadena.
The local team defeated the Central Manufacturing District team of Vernon by 15 to 6 last Tuesday night. San Marino's lineup and runs are listed. Next Tuesday the team faces the Canada Dry team of Los Angeles. Poor lighting hampered play, but the playground commission promises improved lights soon.
The glee club presents a prologue of individual songs and several Verdi selections from Il Trovatore followed by a set featuring thematic pieces. The review notes a dramatic performance with emphasis on vocal variety and stage presence.
Since January 1 San Marino has 73 new homes at a total cost of 682752 dollars. May expenditure totals 117828 dollars. Projects include a Security First National Bank branch at 2180 Huntington Drive designed by Sumner P. Hunt and built by William T. Loesch, plus several private residences by Pasadena and Monrovia builders with local architects.
Judge John A H Sturgeon of Monrovia substituted for Judge James P Mackel at the San Marino Police Court last Saturday. Sturgeon, who has sat on this bench before, added about 178 dollars to the city coffers as fines were assessed.
Charles Howard Fontius, a Stanford senior born November 23, 1914 in Denver, earns inclusion in the 1936 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He served as advertising manager for the 1934 Stanford Quad yearbook and as business manager for the 1935 and 1936 Quads, plus presidencies in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Publication Council.
The American Citizen's Equalization Society led by R. C. Floundy denounces horse racing as a moral and economic ruin and pushes an initiative to abolish track gambling. The group claims minors frequent open bars, relief funds are gambled away, and bookmaking thrives near schools. They expect a November ballot to end the tracks.
The Cactus and Succulent Exhibition at Third and Brea Streets Los Angeles closed with Gilbert Tegelberg of Inglewood winning the Hertrich Trophy and sweeping multiple firsts. Dr R W Poindexter of Long Beach earned blue ribbons for opuntias and mesembryanthemums. Howard Gates of Anaheim, society president, displayed Baja California specimens and won numerous awards.
The American Legion Auxiliary holds its annual Flanders poppy sale to aid veterans and child welfare. San Marino units partner with local schools to raise funds, with sale days May 22 and 23 and school drives through May 29. Proceeds support veterans who made the poppies and child welfare programs.
The Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia denied Congressman John H. Hoeppel and his son Charles a new trial on conspiring to sell a West Point appointment. It ruled the evidence conclusive and will seek Supreme Court review for possible reversal. Both were convicted last December and sentenced up to a year, though Hoeppel maintains innocence and plans to run again.
Southern California Telephone Co. seeks rate reductions for San Marino users at a Railroad Commission hearing. Proposals include 25 to 50 cent monthly cuts for residential and business lines, lower foreign exchange mileage, and partial shifts to Pasadena service.
