The San Marino High School Music Department hosts its first Pops Concert at Neher Auditorium this Friday May 22 at 7 30 p m. Admission is free with refreshments. The program features the Concert Band and Orchestra performing scores from Titanic Robin Hood Evita Star Wars Lion King and Big Band tunes.
Sav-on Drug Store now set to open October 31 at the former Louis Foods site. Louis Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 29, 1996, with American Drug Stores parent company Steve Verzak providing the update.
San Marino Schools Foundation placed near 2000 public thank you signs on homes and storefronts to publicly honor donors to the annual campaign and major gifts since July 1 1997. Foundation president Diane Feldon notes the effort involves trustees and student helpers. Over $676,000 has been raised to date for the 1997 drive.
San Marino High School seniors Andrew Park Jonathan Winarko and Julian Yang have been named USC Merit Scholars through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Park and Winarko are four year varsity tennis players with multiple awards, while Yang is a medical career candidate with USC Book Award and other activities. College sponsored awards range from 250 to 2000 dollars annually for up to four years.
Taylor Talt son of Bradley and Susan Talt of Winston Avenue was elected Associated Student Body president at San Marino High School. He is currently Junior Class president and will be joined by Andrew Hasbun as ASB vice president along with Melissa Corral secretary Nick Morrison treasurer Emily Hill activities and Jordan Lopez athletics. Jonathan Winarko named Rotary Club May Student of the Month. he leads the Math Club, is a National Merit Finalist and highly regarded by counselor Russell Lawler.
A loving school crossing guard named Kathy Klassy is celebrated by students and parents for her tireless presence with a stop sign in one hand and a wave in the other. Parents credit her cheerful greeting with brightening days and easing morning routines. A nine-year-old adds that she is really nice and welcoming on the walk home.
Assemblyman Jack Scott opposed AB 2641 which would have immediately funded 31.5 million for local school projects. The bill died in the Assembly Budget Committee after 10 ayes, leaving districts to seek future bond funding while critics called the move a taxpayer loss.
San Marino records show City Club officially withdrew its request to fund a stone monument honoring San Marino High School cross country teams. The City Council then revoked approval of the Lacy Park sign, initially approved four years ago, amid mixed responses from supporters and critics.
Bruce Davis former Cubmaster Pack 361 at Carver Elementary and Scoutmaster of San Marino Troop 351, sponsored by the San Marino City Club, is chosen for the Silver Antelope Award to be presented at the National Scout Council meeting in San Antonio Texas on May 28. Davis has served as a National and World Jamboree Scoutmaster with San Marino Scouts and sits on the San Gabriel Valley Council Executive Board as Area IV Vice.
San Marino Rotary celebrated 100 percent member participation in Rotary Foundation giving at Joe and Terry Petrillo’s home on May 16. Theme nights included blue suede shoes Chantilly Lace and Pink Carnation as guests danced to Djays of Sound 2000. Activities featured a cake walk bunny hop and dance contests with Pie & Burger of Pasadena providing fiftys fare.
