Ten stained glass windows at St Edmunds Episcopal Church in San Marino will be unveiled at the 11 o clock service this Sunday. The panes depict church history from the Resurrection to the 1941 founding of St Edmunds and are the product of over a year of collaboration between Rev William Aaron Driver and artist Mary Bowling.
Firemen responded early Saturday at 2 a.m. to 3380 Monterey Road to find a blaze in a room belonging to Edward A. Kirchof. A short in a three lamp outlet likely ignited a stuffed chair, with flames spreading to drapes and roof but quickly extinguished. damage estimate unavailable.
San Marino Preparatory School announces annual graduation on Friday June 11 at 2 p.m. Dr. G. S. Dumke dean of the faculty at Occidental College will be the speaker.
Pitcher Phil Carlson of South Pasadena held San Marino to one hit as they defeated the Titans 4 to 1 at Arroyo Park last Tuesday. Hugh Suilley provided San Marino’s only hit with an infield single. Langdon led San Marino with a double and a triple, while MacManigal drove in two with a triple. San Marino’s run came on a squeeze play.
Mrs. O. L. Mestad and Miss Helen E. Rumsey tendered resignations to the Board of Education Tuesday night. both were accepted and will take effect at the end of the June term. Miss Rumsey taught at Valentine School and Mrs. Mestad at Carver School.
Gloom and anxiety grip the group behind the Father’s Nite Show after losing a single valuable blonde wig. Two weeks of searching end with a $100 reward if the wig is returned, with funds going to show proceeds. Residents urged to bring clues to the Tribune office.
The San Marino Board of Education discussed bus service and costs at a recent meeting after residents petitioned for later pick ups and earlier returns. The board denied adding buses, noting six 7:45 am trips would require six new buses and drivers, with a 12 cent tax-rate increase to fund roughly $40,000 in capital costs and $10,000 annual maintenance.
Approximately 1,500 has been raised from nearly 100 contributors in the initial phase of the drive to raise 10,800 for the San Marino Swim Pool Fund. Committee Chairman Roy S Herndon reports confidence the 70,800 goal will be reached with many new and returning donors. He urges residents to mail checks to 2200 Huntington Drive San Marino, noting tax exempt status for community recreation contributions.
Sam Hinton, singer and authority on American folk music, headlines the City Club meeting at Huntington School cafeteria next Tuesday night. He teaches at the University of California and serves as curator of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography museum and aquarium in La Jolla.
Rumors in municipal circles at press time suggest Glenn F. McClung is about to resign after 28 years as head of the city police and fire departments. He is reported to accept a federal post as Instructor of Police Activities for Iran under the Foreign Operations Administration in Washington.
James Ukropina of 2053 Orlanda road joins Edwin Stoney and Jerome Wilson of South Pasadena as San Marino Post 239 delegates to the 1954 California Boy's State Conference in Sacramento June 20 to 26. The trio will compete with about 700 juniors from across the state for a chance to reach Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. later. James is a leader in school affairs and extra curriculars, noted for citizenship, scholarship, and roles in Bengals Hi-Y and Boys League.
At the California Golf Association annual meeting at Del Monte Lodge in Pebble Beach George E Johnson of 1348 West Haven Road was elected president for the coming term He is a member of the San Gabriel Country Club.
In week three of Twilight Softball, Wreckers and City Club Cards shared top spot. City Club Cards won 8 1 over Scout Dads, then 16 0 against City Employees. City Club Cubs defeated Kiwanis in a dramatic late rally May 6.
Spencer Van Dyke announced Mrs. R. G. Kenyon of 2805 Carlaris Road as San Marino campaign manager for U S Senator Thomas H. Kuchel. Kenyon formed a committee including Mrs. McIntyre Faries Mrs. Neil Thackaberry Mrs. Edith Sears Mr. Benjamin Eaton Mr. Charles Arthur and Mr. Keith Ferguson. Mrs. Sears leads Women for Kuchel and coffee hours will inform voters about the senator.
San Marino will hold its annual school election Friday May 21 Robert F Treuer the current president of the Board of Education is the unopposed candidate Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr C C Trillingham urged a good turnout saying a vote of confidence will support the close relationship between the people and the unpaid board members
The San Marino Young Republican Club invites the public to a 35 minute technicolor Hydrogen Bomb film at City Hall Tuesday 8 p.m. The film debuts to general audiences after being released to Congressmen and officials and was arranged by Congressman Pat Hillings for the club.
Funeral services were held May 3 for Mrs Martha Louise Brown of 2015 Robin Road at the Chapel of Turner Stevens and Eggleston. Interment followed in San Gabriel cemetery. A Monterey Indiana native she resided in San Marino 15 years and is survived by daughter Miss Pauline Brown of the same address.
