Fight revived on Huntington tax exemption
A plan to end the Huntington Library and Art Gallery tax exemption is set for another hearing on May 18 before the State Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee. Assemblyman Paul Ritchie pushed revival after a prior 8 to 3 tabling, citing need for fuller facts and consideration. The library, a 1930 public gift of Henry E Huntington, drew about 200000 visitors last year, many from outside California.

San Gabriel Educator Hurt In Train Crash
Kyle L. French 40 of San Gabriel suffered a four inch scalp laceration a fractured left elbow two fractured tibias and possible vertebra fracture after his Pontiac collided with a Pacific Electric train at the St. Albans and Huntington drive crossing. He was transported to Alhambra Hospital by DuBois ambulance. The train was west bound to Los Angeles. French a former city councilman and member of the San Gabriel Board of Education was found near the crossing after the impact which spun the car and caused it to crash into the Wig-wag pole. The incident was investigated by local police and witnesses included A Robertson and George F. Biddle. The crash was the second auto accident involving a PE train within a month.

Final rites for Joseph A Hartman were held Saturday afternoon at the Dunningham and OConnor chapel in Los Angeles. Hartman, who died Thursday at his home 978 Afton Road, was born in Frostburg Maryland and moved to California in 1919. He owned the House of Hartman, advertising typographers, and had a seventeenth year in typography. He leaves his widow Helma Hartman and a son Russell Hartman.
