In a full council session chaired by Mayor Richard H. Lacy the door bell and handbill ordinance was amended to exclude newspapers with bona fide subscriptions from its scope and was tabled until the next meeting. Delivery agency representatives urged against the measure citing employment impact for callers and solicitors.
Paul L. Johnson general manager of the Bell System exhibit at the San Diego Fair plans and arranges the display in Balboa Park. The exhibit features three working demonstrations including telephone voice and scrambled speech used in trans oceanic calls designed for both technical and lay visitors.
The San Marino Girl Scout House fund drive is $200 from its goal. Groundbreaking will begin once the final $200 is received, with the Board of Trustees hoping to raise the amount by May 15 to start construction.
K L Carver was re elected president of the San Marino Board of School Trustees at last Wednesday's meeting. Dr E H Morrissey was re elected clerk. Everett Sebring of Pasadena was hired to assist with auditorium interior decorating. Auditorium chairs will be purchased from the American Seating Company. Chemist engineers reported granite work 50 percent stronger than architects specified.
An elderly driver J. O. McCament of 658 South Euclid Pasadena was injured when his car overturned after a stuck throttle at the Santa Anita and California intersection. He suffered serious facial lacerations and body injuries as Officer Rose reported the Sunday morning wreck en route toward the Imperial Valley.
The Southwestern Military Academy plans two evening programs at Lincoln Hall directed by Major Maurice Veronda and academy faculty. The lineup includes The Obstinate Family, a thoughtful comedy featuring James the butler and Lucy the maid among a cast of cadets and faculty members.
The San Marino Day celebration committee met at 1060 Roanoke Road Tuesday night to finalize a tentative plan. Mr. and Mrs. James L. Beebe hosted the gathering as members agreed on preliminary arrangements for the event.
Tickets for the May production of the San Marino Players run May 9 through May 18 at 8 30 p m daily in Studio Theater. Performances of At the Sound of the Gong by Robert Chapin feature a scientific drama cast. Tickets cost 50 cents with informal dress, call Colorado 6793 or Alhambra 2696 1 for sales.
Harold Raymond Pauley of 521 La Paz road and three companions were forced to land near Fillmore after engine trouble on a flight from Bakersfield. They received emergency treatment in Fillmore and returned home. The group included H J Vickers of Huntington Beach, Eugene Overton of Los Angeles their attorney and Lee Williams of Los Angeles the pilot.
Two Monrovia youths and their plans were revealed after arrest by Officer Haynes. They ran away Monday, stole two bicycles, rode to Seal Beach, and planned a sea voyage to San Diego in a self built sailboat. Hunger and homesickness brought them back, found by Chief Woods near San Ma.
The Western Statistical Association of Los Angeles reports San Marino up 950 residents or 23.47 percent since the last census, from 373 to 4680 in January 1934, with Beverly Hills showing a similar increase. The study covers 45 Los Angeles County cities and aims for a consistent countywide estimate rather than piecemeal figures.
San Marino plans a new Garden Club with monthly morning meetings at members’ homes starting May 21 at 7 pm hosted by Mrs. Roy F. Ensign. William Hertrich, Huntington Estate superintendent and San Marino City Council member, will speak on botanical gardens and club operations. The club will be independent and feature talks from nurseries and garden groups.
