San Marino topped Southland building permits in April with a total of 505,522 and 52 cities overall reported 19,044,928 for March. Los Angeles area cities showed strong activity with Santa Monica close behind and growth noted across fifty-eight Pacific Southwest cities as the 1929 year gains accelerate. Marian Melzer an eighth grade student has been chosen for Queen of the May at the May Day exercises today Friday at one o clock on the front lawns of the local grammar school Huntington drive Elmer C Neher principal announced A Maypole drill dances by the queen her attendants fairies and other grades and acts will be performed Costumes will be worn The outdoor program will last about two hours inviting San Marino residents to attend on school lawn

Junior Olympic Entries Named
The Los Angeles County Junior Olympic trials conclude with Harry Teeple of El Molino earning the senior division spot for San Marino while Riley Cenfer will represent the junior division. Teeple posted 321 points. Walford Crockett had 267. Nicholas Stahvitch placed second in juniors. Only division winners advance to Los Angeles for county leaderships. Teeple’s marks include a 7 ft 11 in broad jump and a 9.2 sec 75 yard dash. The senior-junior cut is 100 pounds. other competitors for Coach MacMillan were Wilfred Westcott Lloyd Clark and William Murphy. Frank Leicester, a junior high student, won the senior honor last year.

First Jury Trial Held in Local Police Court
The city’s police court conducted its first jury trial last Saturday before Police Judge William Northrup. F. G. Lawrence was found guilty after a jury of local residents, with several jurors named, and fined the sum of $25. Dr. Maronde testified Lawrence appeared under the influence of liquor, violating city ordinance against public intoxication.

Troop 2 Leads Busy Scout Program At City Park Cabin
Scoutmaster Carroll Holt presided over a varied program at the scout cabin in the city park with Troop No 2 and visiting parents. Fire Chief E F Co ope gave a fire prevention talk. Troop No 2 belongs to the San Marino Fire Department scout auxiliary. Refreshments were served by the boys. A future trip to La Habra Heights for an overnight camp with Edwin G Hart is planned, with Troop 1 to be invited as guests.

State School Head Delivers Talk at Banquet
Vierling Kersey the State Superintendent of Public Instruction spoke at a San Gabriel Valley League banquet at San Marino Grammar School. He urged Californias schools to plan for the future, highlight uniform teacher solidarity, and tackle finances, personnel, and education trends with in state leadership. The Huntington Library and Art Gallery reported 14,071 April visitors, averaging 612 per exhibition afternoon across 23 sessions. Since opening in 1928, over 165,000 people have viewed the collections, gardens, and exhibitions, with high resident interest and reduced congestion.
