The San Marino Fire Department offers a 90 minute Neighborhood Emergency Action Team program to organize neighbors before during and after major emergencies. Twenty five Neighborhood Watch groups have received the training and Captain Kevin Lennox can be contacted at 300-0735 for more information.
City survey asks residents not selected in the initial random draw to respond. April mailing ended, final questionnaires go out this week to gauge opinions on the SM Police Department. Call Kimberley Yanoscik at 300-0719 with questions.
The San Marino Public Library and Friends of the Library announce a book fair on Saturday May 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library parking lot. Over 8000 donated hard cover and paperback books will be sold at general sale Collector's Corner and Book Shoppe.
Huntington Library teams with San Marino High School to design and launch the first on line exhibit for the library. Under Jerry Koiles and Bonnie Hanson SMHS students will create a web based virtual exhibit from the Votes for Women collection. The six week course runs June 16 to July 25 and is open to arts graphics and computer interested students.
More than 500 runners walkers in-line skaters and volunteers participated in the South Pasadena San Marino YMCA Road Runner Classic 5K and 10K through San Marino and South Pasadena. Roger Stokes, race chair, said over 5000 dollars was raised for YMCA wellness programs. Winners included Jeff Snyder Kirk Pastre Lee Baca and Roger Nelson in various age divisions.
City SMCC 14.08.03 makes minors under 18 who are in school liable for misdemeanor loitering penalties with about a $100 fine and possible driver license suspension. Exemptions include parent accompaniment, emergency errands, traveling to work or medical appointments, and approved school activities. seniors may leave campus for lunch with ID.
Bakersfield historical note describes a geologist and veteran Rogers, who entered politics after a sudden tax hike and won Bakersfield city council seats in 1973 and 1977. It lists his affiliations with geologic and farming groups and his Senate committee assignments. Peter Ford, KIEV radio host, to speak at lunch. he served 21 years as LA County sheriff’s reserve deputy and remains active in charities.
San Marino officials and community groups planted three camphor trees on Huntington Drive near Palomar Road during Arbor Day ceremonies. City Hall contingents, Chinese Club, and San Marino Environmental Network attended as the city moves toward Tree City USA recognition. The event followed a March 12 tree planting at Lacy Park honoring the Chinese Club’s tree donations and Taiwan’s Arbor Day.
The SM Board of Education approved a change to the boundary plan for elementary enrollment. Kindergartners will be phased in with first graders, eliminating the sibling rule tied to Valentine. Superintendent Jack Rose said growth at Carver is the goal while minimizing disruption. New families entering the SMASD are directed to see Boundaries on page A-4.
Joan Cathcart Marnie Dam and David Destino of SM were honored with golden apples plaques and pins at the Northwest San Gabriel Valley Administrators Association Golden Apple Breakfast on April 24 at Santa Teresita Hospital Duarte. Jack R Rose SMUSD superintendent praised their tireless district service and commitment to San Marino schools.
Huntington students tour Washington and New York City visiting Capitol, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Empire State Building and Times Square then stay at Embassy Suites. They scene Ellis Island Chinatown Greenwich Village Lincoln Center Central Park and FAO Schwarz before returning to DC via Penn Station.
