Preston B Hotchkis of San Marino has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UC Berkeley Foundation. A longtime trustee since 1979 and CEO of Bixby Ranch Company, he helps lead Keeping the Promise capital campaign aimed at raising $400 million by June 1990.

The San Marino High School Swim Team challenges Cherry Creek High School of Denver in a 3 p.m. Friday, April 13 dual at the McDonalds Olympic Swim Stadium at USC. San Marino honors include national titles, CIF successes, and captaincy by Pinder, Schaus, Miller, Sakamoto, and Dizon.
Work Begins On SMHS Grad Nite
San Marino High School parents launched Grad Night 1990 preparations transforming two gyms and a parking lot into a tropical setting. Nearly 50 senior parents and volunteers loaded past years’ sets onto trucks, moved them to the Great American Drive site, and began building an adaptation of Pirates of the Caribbean. Renowned Hollywood designer Joel Schiller again led the design concept with Pat Connell, the artistic liaison for 15 years, aiding the effort. Lois and Jim Ukropina chaired Grad Night 90 with Beth and Ed Rettig assisting.

San Marino School Board honors Burt Kanner and students
San Marino High School swim coach Burt Kanner and both the boys and girls teams received Board recognition for their achievements. The girls pursue an eighth straight league title while the boys aim for a third CIF crown and 18th consecutive league title. The teams were ranked National Small School Power Point champions last year and will face Cherry Creek High School at USC on April 13. Also honored was teacher Peter Paccone for guiding 19 students to a second place in a Constitutional Rights Foundation competition in Pasadena.

San Marino Officer Arrested After Overnight Barricade
San Marino police officer Garry Wong 29 barricaded inside his Lombardy Road home after a spousal abuse call. After an hour and a half standoff police convinced him to surrender by phone. he was booked for felony spouse abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. The 5 month old child was unharmed. Wong posted a 5000 dollar bail and faces arraignment in Pasadena Court next month.

Gardener wounded as 78-year-old shoots with pellet gun
San Marino police arrested 78 year old Fred Haggerty after he shot gardener Eliseo Plata of El Monte with a pellet gun as Plata trimmed a tree at Monterey Road and Ramiro Road across from Southwestern Academy. Plata received treatment for a superficial arm wound and returned to work next day. Haggerty was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and released on bail. arraignment set in Pasadena for April 20.
