San Marino enters week four of its Red Cross Fund Campaign with a $38,650 quota. Chester Gilgen, Water Safety Program manager, highlights community benefit from Red Cross courses at San Marino High School Pool. He notes 1000 youths completed instruction with qualified instructors and certificates awarded.
Twelve year old Andrea Lee Holliday died Sunday in the City of Hope. Born in Los Angeles and raised in San Marino she was the daughter of Beverly Holliday and granddaughter of Hyland Durel and Carl Ketsay. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
San Marino High School students will enjoy a Saturday breakfast in the girls gym on March 30 with the theme Rise and Shine. Local merchants donated door prizes and entertainment will run all morning. Menu includes pancakes doughnuts fruit juice milk and te xanes. Proceeds go to a student project organized by the ASB Council with help from a local market.
Peter Walker, 10, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Walker of Oxford Road, caught a 120 lb sailfish off Mazatlan Mexico while vacationing. He reeled it in in 12 minutes using marlin tackle and a shoulder harness and won the boat’s pool for the largest fish. In three days he also landed a foot shark and a 30 lb dolphin.
San Marino fathers near final rehearsal for the Annual Fathers Show at the San Marino High School Auditorium scheduled for April 4 5 and 6. Produced and directed by local citizens Rich ard Melville and Stan ley Clark with wives and friends handling costumes and dances. Proceeds fund a Youth Canteen for San Marino teens as the group aims to cut costs by using volunteers instead of professionals.
Tony Dean son of Mr and Mrs Max Dean of Rubio drive won a zone student speakers contest conducted by the Lions Club last week. Dean who won the local club contest earlier this year will compete in a regional run off April 2. He spoke on My Place In The World of 1976.
San Marino Republican women urge a drastic reduction in the federal budget at a regular meeting. A unanimous resolution calls for cutting billions, warns inflation risks, and asks President Eisenhower and Congress to tighten spending. Members cite household budgeting and urge action by top officials and California legislators.

William Cooper and Brownell Merrill of San Marino High School received Certificates of Recognition as Boy of the Month from the San Marino Exchange Club for February. Cooper is a four year athlete and student leader. Merrill earned a four year Lockheed scholarship and holds multiple scholastic and extracurricular honors.
Four burglaries over the week kept the San Marino Police busy. A. J. Campbell residence on Winston road lost $1000 in jewelry and other valuables. Harland H. Thompson on Oakwood drive saw $20 taken. Dr Clarence Folsom on Winthrop road reported four purses totaling $240 taken during a party. The Huntington Library and Art Gallery suffered a desk theft of $170, and meat vanished from H. B. Jette garage.

Tomorrow San Marino High School will host the San Gabriel Valley District Music Festival presented by the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association. Thirty bands from area schools perform across the festival, showcasing student talent and regional musical programs.
Hamilton J. Stevens of Greenwood Avenue elected president of Turner and Stevens Co at a recent meeting. Also chosen were Mrs. Margaret H. Turner as vice president and Maynard Turner as secretary and treasurer. Stevens has led the firm since 1951 and holds numerous civic posts. The article also covers a regional band festival with 14 high schools and 16 elementary schools participating and lists participating groups and band members.
Emma Berghauser mother of Leonard E. Berghauser of Melville Drive died last Thursday after an extended illness. Born in St Louis, she had lived in California 33 years, most recently in Alhambra. Survived by Leonard E. Berghauser and Ralph H. Berghauser of Los Angeles and a granddaughter. Funeral services were held Monday in Inglewood with interment at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
The Citizens School Tax Campaign Committee led by Sid Wall urges voters to approve a 0.75 tax rate per 100 assessed value on April 11 to raise San Marino teacher salaries. A survey shows San Marino pays high school teachers 376 dollars less, elementary staff 340 dollars less, and clerical and other workers about 282 dollars less than nearby districts. The push argues higher funding is needed to attract and retain quality teachers and keep the school system Pride-worthy.
Mayor Carson W. Ide announces April as Cancer Control Month urging San Marino residents to learn cancer’s Seven Danger Signals and support the American Cancer Society program of education research and service. He notes one in four risk and cites local and Los Angeles figures to push public awareness and donations.
Voters on April 11 will face a choice between using $60,548.10 already in city funds or approving an additional tax to raise about $60,000 to continue the Hunt beautification project. The decision centers on how to finance ongoing urban improvements.
Jerry Bowman a San Marino pharmacist was elected president of the San Marino Business and Professional Association. He succeeds Bill Howard with Dr. Ben A. Patton as vice president and Edward T. Brewster as secretary treasurer. New two year directors include Mrs. Virginia Ream Marvin Carlson Vincent Mackel William A. Howard and Dr. E. Jay Gottfredson. Holdovers are John C. Dalzell Orville Martin Ted Rath Cecil A. Rowe and W. A. Smith.
Mrs Katheryn Coley White sister of Howard B Coley of Garfield Avenue died in a Whittier hospital last Tuesday. Services set for Saturday at 2 30 p m at Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens and Turner in Alhambra. She is survived by her husband Girard L White another brother Henry B Coley and a sister Mrs George B Sherwood
The First District California Congress of Parents and Teachers will host its annual convention on April 10 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium with the theme Dividends from Increased Civic Concern. Polls open at 8:30 a.m. to elect the second division of officers and results will be announced before the convention closes. Candidates include Mrs Lyman Goldsmith and Mrs James Fryer for fifth vice president. The morning session begins at 9:45 with an organ prelude by Bryce La Motte followed by a call to order from President Mrs Howard W Seidell and assistance from Mrs Miles Turpin.
San Marino High School senior Dick Barrett was named to the CIF second team as the Titans guard. He led the team in free throw shooting at .634 and scored 221 points during the regular season helping San Marino tie for the league crown. Skip Face was the first SMHS student named to a CIF team.
Richard M. Johnston of West Haven will spend spring vacation in Mexico City on the KUY Mexico tour sponsored by the combined YMCA and YWCA at the University of Kansas. The group will depart by bus March 29 for five days in Mexico City and return to KU April 7 to resume classes the next day. Johnston is a KU freshman.
Four San Marino scouts received Eagle Scout awards Monday at Huntington School in a San Marino District Court of Honor. Recipients were Jack Batson Emmett MacCorkle Tom Pallard both from troop 255 and Douglas Meskell of troop 356.
